Joseph Block Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Aug. 26, 2024.
Joseph "Gojo" Block, aged 81, passed away on August 9, 2024, in Brevard, North Carolina. Born in Louisville, Kentucky, on January 18, 1943, Joe led a life marked by hard work, kindness, and a deep love for his family and friends.

Joe began his career over 60 years ago as a laborer in Fort Lauderdale, eventually retiring as the owner of Southern National Drywall. His industrious nature allowed him to retire early and live in Great Guana Cay, Abaco, Bahamas for 27 years, where he embraced island life and pursued his passions for fishing and building. He built seven houses in Guana practically single-handedly, his nickname was "ONE MAN GANG."
Joe, so loved his life in the Bahamas, took every opportunity to go fishing with his wife, Nancy, and friends. In the summer, he relished the visits of his family, sharing his love of fishing, lobstering, and easy-going Island life.

He and his wife, Nancy traveled the world. Enjoying life to the fullest.
He loved the adventure side of traveling, zip lining in a central American country, and bunchee jumping off some of the highest venues in the world.

Nancy and Joe Block were together for over 43 years. In a strange and cruel twist of faith, they were remarried just this year.

He was a man of strong character and capability, always ready to lend a hand or drop everything to help his friends-a trait that made him beloved by many. Joe's love for life did not wane with age; he was excited about his new life in Brevard, a community that promised everything he wanted, minus his fishing. Just a day before his passing, he enjoyed a game of golf, another of his cherished activities.

Joe is survived by his wife, Nancy, his beloved daughters, Debbie and Kristy, and their husbands, Owen Yoder and John O'Rourke, respectively. He also leaves behind his cherished grandchildren and great-grandchildren, his siblings Robbie, Kathy, Dennis, David, Gerry, and Michael. He was preceded in death by Georgie Block, his brother.

A life so beautifully lived deserves to be beautifully remembered. Joseph "Gojo" Block will be dearly missed by all who knew him.

My earliest memory of joe was when he entered a competition in ft laud. called The barefoot mailman....they would lug a heavy bag and walk from ft laud beach head north till there was only one left standing. He cosigned for my first set of wheels at 14yrs old which I paid off with a large paper route. He helped me acquire my first credit card at the lemon tree where I met Natalie Block for the first time. He once paid my way to accompany him on a trip to liousville KY to introduce him to aunts, uncles and cousins that he hardly knew. I always told my mother that I wanted to be just like Joe when I grew up. He often made a big deal of my military service and tour in viet nam. He sold me my first triumph motor cycle which changed my life with endless good times. I could go on and on. I had met so many of his friends that instantly respected me from association as his brother. Miss him terribly

I think Joe´s favorite story is the time he was in the Bahamas staying on his boat. He was out for a walk and came across a young boy selling newspapers on a corner. Now as a young boy himself, Joe also sold newspapers on a corner. This young boy had a large stack of papers to sell. As Joe recalled his days of doing the same, he pulled out enough cash to buy every paper the boy had. Then Joe walked along passing out free newspapers to whomever wanted one. I kind of choked up hearing him tell me this as I sold newspapers as a kid also.

Magne and I met Joe in 2000 on Guana Cay. He was always there to answer questions we had and help us anyway he could, that was just how Joe was. He was our neighbor and a good friend.
My deepest sympathies go to Nancy and his family. Rest in peace my friend.

I first met GoJo about 25 years ago. He called me Barbara! When I told him my name was Carol, he said I looked like a Barbara! So that is what he called m all these years!! Joe is an amazing man. I feel so blessed to have called him "friend."

Joe was such a lovely person, always so kind to me. My most memorable trip with him and friends and of course Nancy, was to Patagonia, Chile. I spent a day with him as the others went off on a hike earlier, we had the best time. Love you and you will be missed.
