Joe was a wonderful friend, always welcoming, graceful, friendly, and entertaining whenever he unleashed his sharp sense of humor. He loved sharing his residence in northern Virginia, of which I was a great admirer. I was a provider of oak firewood to Joe and his family from the foothills of the Blue Ridge. He used to quip that he had the only firewood supplier with a Harvard Law degree. Joe was highly accomplished and a major contributor to his community in so many ways. He was a model citizen who left his community and his profession several levels higher than they were when he entered into them. He is missed greatly by all who knew him.

I first met Joe in London in 1979. We were both lawyers. Very quickly an enduring friendship developed. It is no exaggeration to say that it was Joe, who, with his brilliant legal mind, wonderful sense of fun and stimulating conversation, mentored me beyond any other lawyer I have ever known. He opened new horizons both through his breadth of vision and the global reach of his legal tentacles. In short, he changed my life. I have so many reasons to be grateful to him and I shall miss him and the camaraderie that we shared.

Joe was a great friend to me. More importantly he continued to check up on my father, Jim Patton until he passed away a couple of years ago. His smile and sense of humor were both enormously infectious. God bless.

Simply put, Joe filled a room - in a wonderful way with his warmth, caring, wide interests and heartfelt questions on a wide range of topics, laughter and love. I indicated family because he treated us this way though it is actually my brother-in-law´s family that is directly connected. We are grateful to have known Joe and clearly from all that he accomplished professionally and personally (quite evident from this obituary and other write-ups) are among many who will miss him.

I remember Joe´s laugh. I remember being a child playing with Mia and seeing Joe and how, despite his grand presence, he immediately put me at ease with his kindness and his immense love for Mia. I also remember how my parents talked about him with such reverence and respect. He will be missed.

I am a lawyer practising in the legalink member firm for Cyprus Ioannides Demetriou LLC. Many years ago Clay Constantinou of Counsel at what was then Patton Boggs visited Cyprus and met with the President. He called me and passed on Joe´s best wishes. Then in 2013 when Joe has occasion to visit Cyprus and meet with the president he called me and we had coffee. In both occasions he wanted nothing from me other than to say hello and to show he was a friend. That was the mark of the man. A true gentleman and a loyal friend.

No one I ever knew in the practice of international law loved it more than my friend and partner of 40 years. His intellectual curiosity and sharp mind made working together always an adventure in the art of creative counsel. He was so special to so many. Countless young that he mentored will carry his memory and his example forward as a testament to a life very well loved.
