Joseph Richard Coby

Joseph Richard Coby, 87, of Aurora, Illinois, passed away peacefully on July 25, 2025. Born in Covington, Kentucky, Joe lived a life rooted in faith, family, and a deep love of learning new things.

Joe's early years were shaped by his time studying at a Jesuit seminary until he serendipitously met his future wife, Ann. His time in the seminary helped him develop a lifelong passion for theology and service. Later, he earned a Master's degree in mathematics from the University of Detroit, which led to a dynamic career in education and technology. He taught mathematics at Aurora College (now Aurora University), worked as a computer programmer for several years, and retired in 2003 as the Director of Information Technology at Saint Xavier University. Ever the seeker of new knowledge, he worked to develop his skills as an electrician after retirement and used those skills to help many family and friends with home wiring needs.

A man of quiet strength and philosophical musings, Joe was known for leading Bible study groups in his parish and for his thoughtful, compassionate nature. He found joy in mentoring others, building new things (several porches in town have his signature on them), listening to Classical and Jazz music (Take Five by the Dave Brubeck Quartet would transfix him), playing golf (another new retirement skill), and spending time with his family. Traveling to destinations near and far with family was a favorite way to share time and adventures together. Siesta Key beach in Florida became a haven from the stresses of work life and continued to be a favorite destination in retirement.

Joe was the beloved husband of Ann Coby for 56 years, a devoted father to Jennifer Connon and Aaron Coby, and a proud grandfather to Logan Connon, Aidan Winstead-Coby, and Alayna Winstead-Coby. One of six siblings, he was the cherished son of the late Bernard and Thelma Coby.

A memorial service will be held on September 13th (10:30 am) at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church in North Aurora to celebrate Joe's life and legacy. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations be made to a local parish or charity in Joe's honor.
