Fellow Alum, St. Margaret's of Riverdale, Manhattan Prep, Manhattan College: Have not seen Joe since our infamous summer of '53. During spring break, 4 of us...Joe, Paul Higgins, Tom Walsh & myself travelled to Spring Lake, NJ to scout job opportunities for the summer. Returning home to Riverdale empty handed, we met again one Fri. in early June to try our luck @ jobs in Cape Cod. Joe negotiated the purchase of a '32 Ford convertible, w/a rumble seat, for $50 (partnership) & we left the next morning for the Cape. Unsuccessful at finding jobs commensurate w/our experience & talents, we returned to Riverdale & immediately headed for another try at Spring Lake. Joe landed a waiters job @ the Warren Hotel, Paul as a bartender @ the "Sandpiper" in Sea Girt & T. Walsh & I as lifeguards on the beach. It was a grand & glorious summer, which is burned indelibly & favorably in my memory bank. Joe's roots were deep in Riverdale & is now assured safe passage when welcomed by Mick O'Hagan at the Pearly Gates.

My deepest sympathy to the Conway family. My mother, Irene Birnstill, his long-time dedicated secretary and friend, had always told me what a wonderful man Mr. Conway was to work for and I myself had the pleasure of knowing him when, as a teenager, I worked at Cahill Gordon as well. He was a funny guy, he would always tease me and tell me he was really Mel Ott, the NY Giants baseball player. I smile knowing he is with my mom now, he might be saying, "Irene, take a letter".

So sorry to here of Joe's passing. My mom, Irene Birnstill, was fortunate enough to be his secratary at Cahill Gordon for many years, and he was a great friend to her and our family during that time. He always made time to talk to myself and my brothers when we called or stopped in at moms office. He was "real good guy". The Birnstill family will always think of him fondly for his generosity and friendship.

John, Edward and I are deeply saddened to learn of the passing of my father's best friend, Joe Conway. Joe's great sense of humour, fun and 'bottom line' common sense will be sorely missed.

The Manhattan College alumni community shares the grief, and is now praying for our fellow alumni and the family at this time. The Alumni Office has been informed. As well as the Jasper Jottings community that I personally can reach. We are all a little poorer now. "No man is an island, entire of itself … any man’s death diminishes me". We are sorry for your loss.
