Joseph (Joe) Steven Cook, 64, passed away peacefully on June 9, 2025 after battling an aggressive stroke. Several of his loved ones were present with him, praying and comforting him in his last moments.
Joe was born in Houston, Texas on October 5th, 1960 to Jon Phillip Cook Senior and Juanita Ann Byrne Cook.
Joe was a man of few words. His mom, Nita, would tell the story of how he did not speak for the first few years of his life. Then one day as a toddler, out of the blue, he exclaimed "Momma, look at that dog over there." She supposed he just didn't have anything interesting to say before then.
Joe was a fighter. His brother Phillip will casually say that he and Joe fought everyday, not some days, everyday!
Joe was a hard worker. At an early age Joe started a career in construction that would span the majority of his life. Joe and his brother Phillip began framing for a local home builder. His friends and coworkers gave him the nickname "Joerilla" because he he didn't need a ladder to climb the walls. Joe moved on to work for his brother Jonny installing sheetrock and then worked to install cable lines in the early eighties when it first became available. Joe finally settled in a career as an electrician.
Joe persevered. Over the years Joe would hit some roadblocks. He was known for skipping school with his friends and one day he got on the bus and then quietly jumped out of the exit door. When mom asked if Joe had gotten on the bus, his sister Judy replied yes. She left out the part where he had gotten off. He stopped attending high school in the 11th grade to work. Eventually he wanted to rectify that and received his GED. He then went on to earn his Journeyman's license as an electrician and became a supervisor.
Joe was introduced to Patricia (Pat) Wright, in 2002 by his sister in law, Rhonda. Joe and Pat became close right away and had been friends and companions since that day. Pat's son Bryan, also became a significant part of Joe's life and Joe was a father figure to him.
Joe and his friends were inseparable. Chuck, Brent, Tommy, and Irvin were names we would hear around the house often. Joe spent lots of time enjoying visits and having a beer with his friends.
Joe was an avid sports fan who always rooted for the hometeam. He would get together with friends to watch the games. In his mind Houston always won, and if they lost it was because of the officials. In one case, Houston lost a big game by missing a last second field goal, and Joe later came home and proclaimed "We won that game," everyone looked in astonishment. But no matter what, he was watching all the games even when his team had the worst record in the league.
Joe loved to laugh. His favorite shows were Andy Griffith and The Beverly Hillbillies. "He knew his gosintas" as his sister Judy said. Joe had an infectious laugh and grin as he retold funny stories from his life and his favorite shows.
Joe was preceded in death by his parents Jon and Juanita Cook, and his brothers Donny, Jonny and David Cook, his sister-in-law Rhonda Cook, and his nephew Bryan Cook.
He is survived by his long time partner and friend Patricia Wright and her son Bryan (Ann) and by his brothers and sisters and their spouses Jon Phillip Junior, Judith Ann (David), Jesse Donald (Chau), Jeffery Paul (Becky), Jane Kimberly, Jennifer Lynn (Shannon), and Jason Michael (Kathy).
Joe also leaves behind his nieces and nephews Billy, Kimberly, Mart, Jon, Tommy, Chris, Becca, Ashley, Kristy, Kailey, Turner, Shannah, Sam, Vivie, Jake and Gabby. He also had many great nieces and nephews.
Joe will be dearly missed and his family will be having a celebration of life Sunday Jun 29th from 10 am to 2pm. It will be held at Levine Park, 406 Main Street Sealy, Tx 77474
