Joseph P. Curto, 88, beloved husband of the late Joan (Hoben) Curto, passed away on Wednesday, September 13, 2017 at Winchester Hospital. Born in Medford, he is the son of the late Anthony D. and Bridget (Sullivan) Curto. Joseph grew up in Medford and enlisted in the United States Army at the age of 16. He served during WWII. Upon his discharge, Joseph worked for Mystic Steel, his family's company. Joseph married the love of his life, Joan in 1955 and settled in Reading. During the Cuban Missile Crisis in the 1960s, he enlisted again, this time in the United States Navy. He was a member of the Sea Bees and served for 12 years. Joseph utilized his talents at iron working and opened his own company, Lynn Steel Boats. He constructed many fishing vessels in the New England Fleet, even building his own 45-foot steel scallop boat in his back yard; which was quite a sight when it had to be carried out by a crane. After retiring from an elaborate career of building, joseph and his wife dedicated themselves to their grandchildren. His proudest moments came from being with them and their own children. He was an avid fisherman, a member of the American Legion and most of all, enjoyed spending time with his family. He was a loving husband and dedicated father and grandfather. He will truly be missed. He is survived by his two children: Thomas Curto and Denise Selfridge; two grandchildren: Thomas and Mark Selfridge; and one brother James Curto. He is predeceased by his siblings: Jean Larsen, Dot Macaboy, Betty Gibson, Lorraine Long and Ralph Curto. Family and friends are cordially invited to gather and share memories with his family at the Doherty-Barile Funeral Home, 11 Linden Street, Reading on Friday from 5 to 7pm. A prayer service will conclude the visitation at 7pm. Parking attendants and handicap entrance available. For further information, please visit www.facebook.com/BarileFamilyFuneralHome.
