JOSEPH FOREMAN

Riverboat Joe / RBJ

(July 25, 1945-April 20, 2023)

Joseph Foreman was born on July 25, 1945 in Port Arthur, Texas. He passed away peacefully into eternal rest on April 20, 2023 at his home in Chicago, Illinois. He graduated from high school in 1963. He went on to Dillard University, New Orleans, La. and graduated in 1969 with a Bachelor's Degree in Biology with a Minor in Education. Joseph understood what Malcolm X meant when he said: "Education is the passport to the future, for tomorrow belongs to those who prepare for it today." He went on to earn a Master's Degree in Education and taught in the Chicago Public School System for over 25 years.

Joseph was a man of faith who walked with God and attended Church regularly. He was extremely kind and patient . He never forgot where he came from and always reached back as a talented teacher educating and pulling up students of color to look, be, and do their best. He loved Gospel and Oldies but Goodies music. He was a renaissance man. He was a little league baseball coach, mentor, entrepreneur, trumpet player, band leader, civil rights and sports advocate. But he cherished most his divine family.

Joseph was preceded in death by his parents Mr. Joseph and Mrs. Gustavia Foreman, Aunt Jonnie May Byrd and his divine son Christopher Joseph Foreman. He leaves to cherish his memories: his daughter April S Williams n?e Foreman, Christopher's daughter ( Joseph's grand daughter) Tearis L Foreman, his great grandsons Jovan Joseph Foreman and Karter Smith and a host of other loved ones and friends. Now, Joseph had his ups and he had his downs. But through it all he learned to trust in God. The Bible says to be absent from the body is to be present with the Lord. Joseph's presence on this earth for 77 years will be greatly missed but never forgotten. May he rest in heaven with God and the ancestors in perfect peace.

A CELEBRATION OF HIS LIFE will take place at a future date to be determined at Minnie Riperton Apts. 4250 S Princeton Chicago, Il. 60609

Dear April Foreman Williams and family,

My deepest condolences on the passing of your beloved father and family patriarch Joseph Foreman. I pray that the peace of God will comfort you at this difficult time of bereavement.

April, although we've never met, Joseph was always effusive in expressing his deep love and respect for you, his divine family, and especially his grand and great grandchildren.

We met in 1963 as Freshman at Dillard University in New Orleans, La. We were roommates and we loved our alma mater. We both graduated with degrees in biology. He went on to become an educator in Chicago and I went on to work for the Department of Defense.

We remained best friends for over 59 years. I will always remember him warmly as a brilliant man of deep faith, who loved Church, music and family. He was a true gentleman, caring, kind, dapper and an outstanding educator who loved teaching children of color.

April, I recognize that each day is a gift for us but I wasn't ready for your call with the sad news of his sudden yet peaceful passing. I've been thinking of him often and looking forward to our regular phone calls with long chats and lots of laughs.

Riverboat Joe (as he was affectionally known), without you things will never be the same. But there is a higher power that we answer to. And you heard Him calling your name. I'm really going to miss you, my buddy, my friend. I promise you my love for you will never end. Rest with God and the ancestors in eternal grace.
Sincerely,
Claiborne D Haughton Jr.
Former Acting Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense for Equal Opportunity.
