Joseph GAFFNEY Obituary

Published by Ottawa Citizen from Jan. 31 to Feb. 1, 2014.
GAFFNEY, Joseph Cuthbert (Bert)
Bert passed peacefully on Wednesday January 29, 2014 at the Queensway Carleton Hospital. He was four days short of his 86th birthday. Born on February 2nd 1928 the family always found it easy to remember Bert's 'Groundhog Day' birth date. He will be sorely missed by Beryl (nee Clark) - his beloved wife of 61 years; his sons, Michael (Colla) of Nepean, Kenneth of Ottawa; his daughters Patti (Perry) of London, Gail Taylor (Nicholas) of Boulder CO and Alyson Gaffney- Dunlop (Blair) of Manotick. He will also be greatly missed by his ten grandchildren Emily, Samuel, MacKenzie, James, Lyndsey, Patrick, Colla Jane, Katie and the twins Stephanie and Cameron. Bert was predeceased by both parents, Cuthbert and Gertrude and his siblings; Michael (1944) Falaise, France; Mary Ginsburg of Ottawa; Gerald of Hamilton and Francis of Toronto. Bert had an eclectic work life starting with twenty years of service in the Royal Canadian Air Force followed by thirty years of serial entrepreneurship in several businesses including; real estate, hotels and many years the gas and convenience business. Bert's greatest role was said to be the quiet supporting companion of his politician wife Beryl, attending innumerable events, always smiling and friendly. "Not another chicken dinner", he would playfully say. Bert was an interesting character and the world will be a less interesting place without him. The big man will be missed. Dear Beryl and Family

My deepest sympathy for your loss of Mr Gaffney. I was just reflecting the other day on a time when we were kids and Alyson and I were making supper at your Cramer home and Mr. Gaffney was helping us. My thoughts and prayers are with all of you at the most difficult time.
