Very sorry to hear of Joe's passing. His enthusiasm and energy were positively infectious. He made high school more memorable and fun for everyone who was lucky to know him.

I am completely in shock reading this about Joe. "Hawker" was among my first, and closest friends at SLUH. Probably because we were both among the shortest guys in any given crowd, photo or class. My first encounter with him was on a wall-ball court, where his fierceness became instantly apparent.
Of course, we all knew of the legacy of the Hawk family at the U.High with his older brothers who preceded him at Backer Memorial. The sacrifice, and generosity that the Hawk family bestowed on subsequent generations at the U. High in memory of their son, and brother Ed, was legendary. It is through tears that I write these words. I know that Joe was a generous soul, with a kind heart. My prayers are with the Hawk family. I'm sorry this is so late in coming. God bless you all, and may Joe rest in peace. I loved him like a brother.

Sitting in Granny during a thunder storm listening to "Riders in the Storm." Wearing gardening gloves to Danas. Our open door policy in Husman. Passing the soccer ball in Brockman. Frisbee in the Quad. And always a smile on your face and a twinkle in your eye. I miss you and feel sorry for anyone who didn't know you.
Oh, and thanks for the nick name.
Love always,

The entire Patton family would like to extend their condolences to the Hawk family at Joe's passing. The Hawks and the Pattons have had a deep friendship for the past 60 years which has included a whole lot of fun and a whole lot of sorrow, and now we grieve with the Hawks at Joe leaving us.
All of the Pattons will always hold Joe in our memories as a wonderful guy, full of life, whose smile made him look like the cat who just swallowed the canary (and almost always with good reason). Goodbye Joe…we'll see you down the road.

Joe, thanks for all of the fun we had as kids and during our SLUH years. A lot of us have great memories of you driving us around in the "granny mobile." You could have been the poster boy for a person who was a ton of fun and never took himself too seriously. Thanks buddy...hail and farewell." Jimmy and Maryanne Patton

Running thru Bayberry having bottle rocket fights on the 4th - don't try that at home kids. Your mom's butter sandwiches. Playing baseball for the ill-named Warwick Typos. Kill the man with the ball on the fields of St. Clement's - Joe you were always the hardest hitter. So many memories. Always a friend. You made my life growing up so much more fun and fulfilling. You will be missed by so many. Till we meet again.

I'll never forget when Joe petitioned for his dog Homer, at mass, and got jugged. Thank goodness that Pope Francis says that dogs really do go to heaven. He and Homer are running around together right now. God bless you Joe Hawk.
