Joseph R.E. Hedges

WEST YARMOUTH —

Joseph Raymond Edward Hedges, 85, of West Yarmouth, died on Tuesday, July 29, 2008, at EPOCH of Brewster.

Born and raised in Lynn, Mr. Hedges served in the Army during World War II, in the European Theatre. He settled in Medfield and worked several years in landscaping for private homes and at Medfield State Hospital, prior to a career with the U.S. Postal Service. He retired to West Yarmouth in 1984.

Mr. Hedges enjoyed yard work, gardening, fishing, and clamming. He often gathered with friends to play cards and to take trips to Foxwoods.

He is survived by his wife, Virginia S. (Ralph) Hedges; one son, Daniel G. Hedges, and wife, Karen, of Island Pond, Vt.; one daughter, Julia "Lyn" O'Neill, of Millis; two sisters, Rita Devine and Theresa Veiga, of Lynn; three grandchildren, Daniel, Joseph, and Brett; and one great-granddaughter, LuaAnny. He was also the father of the late Raymond Edward Hedges III, and brother of the late Delores Hedges and Claire DeFranza.

A memorial service will be held at the Church of the Advent, 28 Pleasant St., Medfield, on Friday, Aug. 8, at 11 a.m. Visiting hours will be held at the Roberts-Mitchell Funeral Home, 15 Miller St., Medfield, on Thursday from 5 to 8 p.m. Should friends desire, donations my be made in Ray's memory to the EPOCH Activity Fund, 873 Harwich Road, Brewster, MA 02631.
