Joseph Joiner Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Oct. 14, 2007.
Joseph Dutton Joiner Born March 3, 1944 in Washington, DC, to J.B. and Mildred Joiner; passed away unexpectedly Aug. 14, 2007, at his home in Santa Fe, NM. Joe grew up in Lubbock, TX, where he graduated from Texas Tech University in May 1966. He was commission in the U.S. Marine Corps and served in Vietnam in 1967 to 1968 as a rifle platoon commander. After completing his military service, Joe attended law school at USC receiving a doctorate of jurisprudence in 1972. He practiced law in San Francisco for many years before relocating to Santa Fe in 2000, where he continued his practice and devoted significant time to pro bono and volunteer work. His work as pro bono counsel to the Northern New Mexico Radio Foundation helped keep Santa Fe's public radio station on the air, and his work on behalf of the Santa Fe Farmers Market helped secure a permanent home. Joe also served on the board of directors of the Northern New Mexico Chapter of the American Civil Liberties Union and as a chairperson for the Santa Fe County Corrections Advisory Committee. His acute intellect, along with a passion for law and the constitution, were partnered with a terrific sense of humor. He will greatly missed by his family and numerous friends. He is survived by his son, Captain Scott Joiner, USMC; parents, J.B. and Mildred Joiner of Lubbock; brother and sister-in-law, Steve Joiner and Beulah Casey; and niece, Casey Joiner in Addison, TX. A memorial was held by friends in Santa Fe, Aug. 28th, followed by a family memorial in Lubbock, TX.

Joe and I were camp mates and fellow members of the Family Club in San Francisco. We were both former Marines and I valued his friendship. This is very sad news and I wish I could have been at his memorial service. My best wishes to his son and family.
