He was born Sept. 25, 1941 in Ashland, a son of Margaret Patton Joyce of Ashland and the late Marlin J. Joyce. On June 19, 1965, he married the former Carol A. Bollinger of Northumberland. The couple recently celebrated their 40th anniversary.
Joseph was a 1959 graduate of Ashland High School and a 1963 graduate of Susquehanna University. He later earned a master's degree from Temple University.
He was a veteran of the Army Reserve.
Mr. Joyce began his career with the Federal Reserve Bank of Philadelphia, where he rose to the position of vice president and chief human resources officer of the bank.
Following his tenure with the bank, Mr. Joyce worked as director of personnel with the University of Maryland at College Park, where he managed all human resources functions for the University system. He then served as director of personnel for the American Banker's Association in Washington, D.C. and later returned to Philadelphia joining Continental Bancorp as senior vice president. He eventually went on to establish his own human resources consulting firm.
Joseph was an avid reader, writer and sports enthusiast. Many of his articles have been published in several national journals and he taught at many banking and management schools, including serving as an adjunct professor at the Management and Business schools of both Temple University and Ursinus College.
He served in numerous civic and charitable activities including fundraising for Susquehanna University, coaching youth baseball and basketball, and serving as president of the greater Severna Park, Maryland Athletic Association.
His greatest joy and love was his family.
Surviving, in addition to his wife and mother, are two sons and one daughter-in-law, Joseph and Jennifer Joyce Jr. of Athens, and Michael Joyce of Washington, D.C.; one daughter and son-in-law, Christina and Steven Daczkowski of Leonardtown, Md.; four grandchildren, Caitlin and Daniel Joyce, and Garrett and Lindsay Daczkowski; one brother, Thomas Joyce; one sister, Judy Tesno, both of Ashland; and several nieces and nephews.
There will be no public viewing. The family will receive visitors from noon to 12:45 p.m. Tuesday at Sacred Heart Church, 41 Eighth St., Lewisburg, where a Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 1 with Msgr. William Richardson and Father William Nessel as celebrants.
Burial will be in Riverview Cemetery, Northumberland.

Funeral arrangements were made by the Joseph W. Epler Funeral Home, 210 King St., Northumberland.
