KEARNEY JOSEPH D.

Joseph D. Kearney, age 42, died along with his fiancée, Kathryn M. Schurtz, 35, in a tragic interstate collision on Wednesday, November 14, 2018, while driving to their wedding in Pittsburgh. Born in Ohio, Joseph grew up in Pleasant Hills, PA and graduated from Seton LaSalle High School in 1995. He was proud to attend Penn State University where he received a Bachelor's degree in marketing, and went on to earn his MBA from University of Maryland.  Joseph was Director, Emerging Technology, at Verizon, where he helped pioneer Verizon's entry into the advertising business. He was most recently focused on integration of Yahoo and AOL with Verizon, a role that exemplified his ability to bring people together and build new products with the company.  As a young man, Joseph achieved the rank of Eagle Scout, which enriched his lifelong passion for the outdoors, especially hiking, cycling, and camping. He will be remembered for his signature style, sense of humor, spontaneity, his exhaustive knowledge of music and sports, and his love for Kate. Together with Kate, he lived in Jersey City, and loved to travel and host their many friends and family. Surviving are his parents, Dennis and Diana (Heinle) Kearney; his siblings, Dr. Julia Kearney and her husband, Marcus Santos, Anna Kearney, Mary Kearney and Peter and Gretchen (Neidert) Kearney; niece, Emilia Dos Santos; and nephew, Cole Kearney.  He is also survived by a large extended family, including 40 first cousins, and friends around the globe who looked to him as a mentor and confidant.  Friends will be received at the JOHN F.
