Joseph D. Kearney, age 42, died along with his fiancée, Kathryn M. Schurtz, 35, in a tragic interstate collision on Wednesday, November 14, 2018, while driving to their wedding in Pittsburgh. Born in Ohio, Joseph grew up in Pleasant Hills, PA and graduated from Seton LaSalle High School in 1995. He was proud to attend Penn State University where he received a Bachelor's degree in marketing, and went on to earn his MBA from University of Maryland. Joseph was Director, Emerging Technology, at Verizon, where he helped pioneer Verizon's entry into the advertising business. He was most recently focused on integration of Yahoo and AOL with Verizon, a role that exemplified his ability to bring people together and build new products with the company. As a young man, Joseph achieved the rank of Eagle Scout, which enriched his lifelong passion for the outdoors, especially hiking, cycling, and camping. He will be remembered for his signature style, sense of humor, spontaneity, his exhaustive knowledge of music and sports, and his love for Kate. Together with Kate, he lived in Jersey City, and loved to travel and host their many friends and family. Surviving are his parents, Dennis and Diana (Heinle) Kearney; his siblings, Dr. Julia Kearney and her husband, Marcus Santos, Anna Kearney, Mary Kearney and Peter and Gretchen (Neidert) Kearney; niece, Emilia Dos Santos; and nephew, Cole Kearney. He is also survived by a large extended family, including 40 first cousins, and friends around the globe who looked to him as a mentor and confidant. Friends will be received at the JOHN F. SLATER FUNERAL HOME, INC., 412-881-4100, 4201 Brownsville Road, Brentwood 15227, Sunday, November 25, 2018 from 6-9 p.m. and Monday, November 26, 2018, from 2-4 and 6-9 p.m. Visitation will continue on Tuesday morning in St. Elizabeth of Hungary Church, 1 Grove Place, Pittsburgh, PA 15236, from 10-11 a.m., prior to Mass of Christian Burial at 11 a.m. Joseph will be buried with Kathryn in New Jersey. I just heard of this tragic loss. I worked with Joe and Kate at Verizon. Joe and I spent countless hours together working, brainstorming, and chatting to create the future of mobile advertising. He was a passionate and dedicated colleague. I am saddened to hear of his passing. Kate was an intern at the time and clearly a brilliant and driven young women with a quick humor. Tremendously saddened to have lost two shining bright friends.

I am so sorry for your loss. My deepest thoughts and prayers to you during this difficult time. I first met Joe during our Marketing classes at Penn State. It all started when we were put into a group together for our Research Marketing class. It was from there where we learned that we were both Eagle Scouts and Pittsburgh. During Holiday breaks he would offer to drop me off at my parents in the North Hills. I did not even ask, he just offered. That is just the type of person he was. If my memory is correct it was a white pontiac 6000. After graduation he would help prep me for interviews and reminded me to be myself to help me land my first "professional job"
My deepest Sympathy and Prayers for you during this difficult time.
