I came way to late to Joe´s party. I was given a copy of Life Sentences and would have loved to know this amazing man. Rock on Joe. I wish you had written about 10 books. I will share this precious one with all I know. It´s life on life´s terms. Thanks
Your better late than never friend

Joe was an exceptional man, kind hearted and very smart. He always treated my son and I as a friend over the years. Although he was great with computers we loved him for being the man he was and words is not enough to say how much he is missed. My warmest wishes and prayers for his lovely wife Jan. When I first met Joe he was single but a few years later he found a jewel in Jan.

Met him in 2004 off an ad for computer repair on Craigslist. We immediately became friends. He was the most amazing person I have ever known. Always felt I got the better part of the deal. My heart could never match his.

I met Joe's trash can before Joe. The ambulance was taking him away. When his cans were empty, I tried to put them away but was surprised by Joe's sister. She asked who I was and I said nobody just a neighbor who know Jan had too much on her plate to worry about that. Much later Hurricane Irma came, and Joe jumped on his tractor to haul the debris from my yard, without being asked. Later I went into the hospital 3 times one year and Joe came and cut our grass. He fixed my wife PC and even gave her a laptop and a lamp. He did more for us than we ever could do for him. He was just being Joe. He was the most caring individual I ever met. His absence will be greatly felt.

What can one say? Our world will not be the same without Joe. I like to think Shep has him now.

Joe Kirk up wa a wonderful man I met him in the 70's through my brother in law Jess McMinn. He loved animals and when my dog Sharks did he created a Sharkie page
He had heat of gold
He will be remembered and missed. His spirit will live on God bless.

Joe and I were neighbors a short period of time . On our first meeting I knew instantly that we would be friends . He was a good friend , a good man and though we had lost touch over the years I will miss him .

There is a Kirkup-shaped hole in my life now. One that no one else could ever fill.
I met Kirkup in the mid 1970s in Colchester, CT, where he lived off and on for many years. When winter approached, Joe would say "Pack my bags!" and head south to Florida. But Colchester always drew him back. After writing for editor Lary Bloom at the Miami Herald's Tropic magazine, Joe came north in 1980 when Bloom took over the Hartford Courant's Northeast magazine. Joe produced some great, prize-winning articles at Northeast, and I got my dream job when Joey told Bloom to hire me as his editorial assistant!
Our adventures together would fill a book - it's so sad that he's not here to write it.
R.I.P. Joe, with love from Forester!

Joe was truly one of a kind. He was caring, funny, stubborn at times and was always there to help you out. Joe will be missed by so many people who´s lives were touched by him. I knew him when we lived in Colchester, Ct. I still have one of his paperback books and will treasure it always. Smooth sailing Joe till we meet again

In going through Joe´s belongings, I ran across his Purple Hearts and a nice picture of him and his dog, Shep, on a magazine cover. I´ll post them here.
