Joseph Kyle Obituary

Published by Vancouver Sun and The Province from Mar. 26 to Mar. 27, 2005.
KYLE _ Joseph Irvine, born in Belfast, Northern Ireland on February 24, 1923, died peacefully at home on March 16, 2005 at the age of 82, following a lengthy struggle with cancer. Joe moved to Saskatchewan in 1930, then to Vancouver in 1940. He married Annette Roberts in 1946, and they moved to Montreal where Joe studied music composition at McGill University. He had a life long love of opera and classical music. Upon returning to Vancouver, he worked as a management consultant and as a producer in the budding movie industry. In 1967, he co-founded and directed Intermedia, an innovative centre for artists exploring new mediums and techniques, with Jack Shadbolt and Victor Doray. During this time, he also acted as a consultant and advisor at Simon Fraser University. From the late sixties to the early seventies, Joe hosted and produced programs for CBC television. After moving to Victoria in 1973, Joe founded The Victoria College of Art in 1976, where he was director and teacher until his retirement. He also founded The Victoria College of Art Gallery in 1986. Joe has been an exhibiting artist since 1980. His paintings are represented in collections in Canada, the USA, Japan, Hong Kong, England, Germany and Spain. "There is a point where Beauty meets Truth, where Knowledge meets Delight, where Heaven meets Earth. It is to this vision of the Sublime that my painting aspires." His whole life was founded on an untiring search after the truth. Since 1950, Joe had been a devotee of Sri Aurobindo and his spiritual teachings. Joseph is survived by his wife Annette, his six children Alice, Joan, Paul, Sheila, Tom and Kira, 10 grandchildren, and friend Liz Vickers. Memorial Services for Joseph Kyle will be held at 2:30 p.m., Tuesday, April 5, at the University of Victoria Interfaith Chapel and reception following at the University of Victoria Faculty Club (parking in parking lot #6). We would like to thank Victoria Hospice, Home Support Services and his doctors and nurses for their help and support. No flowers by request.
