Joe, I returned from Italy a few weeks ago. I wanted to come see you. Kameron and I have been talking about you and remembering the great times we shared. Now that I have learned the news, I will have to wait until it is my turn to go home before I can see you again. I look forward to one of your warm hugs. I know I can write for Kameron also when I tell you that we will never forget you. You were a great man with a wonderful soul.
+Eternal rest grant unto him, O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon him.
May he rest in peace.

Rip Joe, You knew my mother and father in San Diego and I was born august 4, 1955. My mother named me after her brother Bobby who was killed right out of service there in a wreck in Mexico, My mother gave me the middle name of JO after you. I remember her talking about you and Susie Leonard whom I assume was a sister of yours, I wish I could have met you, I love racing and Nascar and think of you as a real legend. . I never knew my dad Eddie Matthews (a Marine) and mother died at a young age, I wish we had got to meet at some point, Rest in peace and some day I will see you in heaven I hope. You were always a class act and my heart goes out to your family and loved ones. RIP, Bobbie Jo Staton (Matthews)

RIP Uncle

My dad, Joe Indiveri, was a friend of Joe Leonard's. My dad is still around but can't do internet on his own. He spoke of Joe a few times and he sounds like he was a great guy, I wish I could have met him. He has a very nice entry in Wikipedia so he'll always be remembered.

I would like to extend my deepest condolences to the Leonard family on Joe Leonard's passing. I'm from Indianapolis and have great memories from my teens watching him burn up the track at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, especially in 1968 when he was the class of the field. He was the consummate racer and a rare one given that he, like John Surtees, was victorious on both two and four wheels. A rare and gifted man - he will always be missed. May he rest in peace with Almighty God.

I grew up up in Peoria Il. Watched him win races at Peoria TT track. He first arrived as number 98. The next year he was number one. Remember as a little boy asking for his autograph. He was a soft spoken man and very kind.
