Our sincere sympathy to Joe's family at this sad time. Joe taught my son, Steven, in the GT program. He involved the children in such fun learning activities! We all had such deep respect for him. Whenever we ran into him he would be so sincerely glad to see us and would want an update on all our family members. He was a treasure in every way and will be sorely missed. Dear Malkiewicz family,
The passing of Mr. Malkiewicz is very sad. He did touch many lives. My brother Carl had him as his 4th grade teacher at Washington Elementary. I was lucky enough to have learned to square dance from him. My aunt, Tina Kuhn, has taken many dance classes from him.
My deepest sympathy and know that he has touched and made many lives better.
Sincerely,

R.I.P. my condolences go out to the family. Mr. Malkiewicz was my favorite teacher I ever had! In 1972 it was 6 th grade, our class had 12 boys & Poncho! We were proud of the Transavania Express our class newspaper that Mr. Malkiewicz helped & approved of! I will never forget that Memorial Day week-end he took our class on a trip in the Adirondacks to spend time at his church camp! Many memories forever!

Dear Malkiewicz family,
How sad we were to hear of Joe's passing. He was my oldest daughter's teacher while in the Gifted and Talented program. The joy he created for his students as he taught, encouraged, and inspired was incredibily profound and truly appreciated and cherished not only by my daughter, Joe's pupil, but by my other children and myself. Joe got to know us all and I have to say we always looked forward to bumping into him in Wegmans or in the Elmwood Village. He always showed sincere interest and was up for a chat. His loss is great but his giving was also great which will make him immortal to many.

Dear Malkiewicz family:

What would Miss Driscoll's dancing school been without Mr. Malkiewicz there, guiding young men and women in the art of ballroom dancing? I was a student who gained more confidence in my dancing ability due to Mr. Malkiewicz's instruction. He was such a prominent presence at the school and I will miss him dearly. Please know that I will be thinking of you during this difficult time.

Dear Malkiewicz Family: - From every child and parent here in Buffalo who had the delight of meeting your family at dance lessons; please know that tall, straightbacked, elegant and kind Mr. Malkiewicz will be missed. He taught both our sons to dance. They might not always waltz but they will always get out there on the dance floor. Always and forever Mr. Malkiewicz lives in their hearts and souls. Thank you for sharing him with us. He was a wonderful neighbor to all of Buffalo.

Joe and i were friends from the time we were freshman at Kensington High School in 1954. We went to college together and participated in Casting Hall at Buffalo State. I fondly remember his beautiful daughters, especially Andrea and Nicolle. We had the opportunity of renewing our friendship in 11/09. I feel badly that I did not see him again, as well as his lovely wife, Martha.

Joe truly left the world as a better place than when he arrived. A job well done!

I remember Joe as a brilliant teacher with an amazing sense of humor. I fondly recall looking forward to his classes, when he would teach us elementary school kids about Greek mythology and Shakespeare. I know I speak for others when I say that he had a profound impact on my life at an early age, and showed me things I'd never have otherwise seen. I feel blessed to have known him, and I know his memory will live on fondly in the hearts of many.

July 25, 2011

I am so sorry to hear of your loss. I always think back to Joe's suggestion for me to teach clogging through adult education in kenmore. Because of that idea, we had one of the biggest clogging groups in the area. I always had so much fun at his folk dance parties that he held years ago as well. He will surely be missed by dancers and non-dancers, Rick Smith

Dear Martha, Mark, Anna and the rest of the family,

When I heard Joe had died, it was like hearing a giant oak tree had fallen in the forest. Joe was proud of his family, was a gifted teacher, and an influential leader in his church.

Recently I read again the booklet titled "Strictly Personal," a collection of selected essays by the late Rev. Dr. Paul N. Carnes, edited by Joe. The booklet was a gift to all who supported the annual fund drive in 1993. In the Foreward Joe said, "mugs break, pens wear out, stationery gets used up. But a book is a gift in perpetuity!"

Joe was a giant of a man physically, a gentle giant. He was also creative and fun and always had something positive to say when talking with people.

I journeyed to many lands with Joe through his folk dancing sessions. I'm happy I attended his last one just a few weeks ago. Joe's life was a dance and he danced every one.

My family and I are thinking of you during this time of great loss and sorrow.

Mr. Malkiewicz was an amazing teacher who encouraged my love of theatre and the arts. I will never forget doing an abridged production on Macbeth in the fourth grade, and the patience that he had in molding his students to say some of the most complex lines in the English language. It is the kind of challenge and inspiration I hope to provide for my students.

He was kind to everyone he encountered, and I send my deepest condolences to Martha and the rest of the family.

Malkiewicz Family,
Joe was a very special human being. He was easing going, had great repore with any age, positive, motivational, intellectual, multi talented, the role model of what a teacher should be, a gentleman, and fun to be with.

He was a pillar of the UU Church of Buffalo and for all the students he taught. We will all miss him very much.

We knew Joe Malkiewicz not only as a friend but also as a wonderful teacher of our 4 children in the Kenmore East Gifted and Talented Program - Eric, Andrea, Evan and Mary Grace. He taught them about Shakespeare and involved them in plays and cultural field trips. We saw Joe often, at such places as the Elmwood Arts Festival as well as riding his bike on the bike path near the Corps of Engineers on Niagara Street. Just a few weeks ago, we noticed that our daughter, Andrea, and her husband Mike are listed as donors for Shakespeare in the Park just above Joe and Martha Malkiewicz - that made us feel special. We are better for this world as a family because of Joe and all the great things he did. We will miss him.
