I knew Fr Joe when he was at St Mary's in Beverly. He always had a smile on his face and was so happy to be a priest.

The first Mass I served as an altar boy was with him officiating.

The last time I saw him, about 10 years ago, I was surprised that he remembered me, but that is the kind of man he was.

He will always be in my prayers.

Fr. Joe was my cousin but more like an older brother. He told me never to smoke, God wants us to be happy, and showed us how to enjoy life. When he was home on vacation during his seminary years, he came to our house and wallpapered for my Mom while listening to songs from Oklahoma. He was my hero.

Dear Manning Family,

I am so sorry to hear of your loss. I lived on Scituate St. in Arlington, right next door to the Mannings. I was much younger than Father Joe but my parents were friends of Joe and Peg. They were wonderful people and good neighbors. I remember hearing about Father Joe being ordained.
Know that you are in my thoughts and prayers at this time.

I, too, would like to offer my sympathy with the passing of Fr. Manning. We've, my wife and I, have been members of Our Lady of Lourdes for many decades. The late Tom Egan and I shared the lectoring at the 10:00 A.M. Mass for many years. When Fr. Manning knew that I was, "in-between jobs," and the Rectory Cook was on vacation, I was invited to cook for that week. I think I spoiled him. When I looked at the amount of money he gave me for one week's work, he told me, "Consider it a big tip!"

One Thanksgiving, when my Dad was up visiting, I and my old son co-lectored. My youngest son was the altar-boy. My Dad knelt next to us. (He was a Speaker for the Holy Name Society in Buffalo, N.Y.)

After Mass, Fr. Manning looked at us and said, "I was lucky to get a word in, edgewise!"

Every so often, after one of his homilies, I told him, "Bishop Sheen would have been proud."

We'd also talk about the old Latin Masses. My founding Pastor, at Saint Benedict's in Bufflao, N.Y. was also an Armed Forces Chaplain during, "The War."

I felt honored to have known him.

I had the great luck of being Father Mannings landscaper for the last 19 years. A finer man you will never find. I will miss his smile every week, our good conversations and his beautiful hydrangeas that his mother planted. Father Manning, you enriched my life by just being you. Your reward waits for you in heaven. Until then ...enjoy God's company.

Dear Fr. Manning: one of his first parishes was St. Mary's in Beverly, Ma where he put the hearts of young girls in a flutter... the Tyrone Power of the clerical set... very nice man.. very involved with teenagers.. great smile.. willing shoulder on which to cry as one experienced life's teen angst periods... just a wonderful man. Thanks for the memories Father Joe.
