Published by TBO.com from Jun. 19 to Jun. 21, 2009.
MARTINEAU, Joseph A., D.D.S., 71, passed away June 17, 2009. He was preceded in death by his loving wife, Jane of 35 years, in 2001. He is survived by his son, Sean and daughter-in-law, Maureen; granddaughters, Margaret Jane and Rory Lee; sister, Mary Sue Martineau; and his best friend these past three years, Nelson Newbold of Inverness, Fla. Nelson made dealing with this disease easier due to his employment in Radiation Oncology. A special thanks to Jim and Sandy Schroder for their long friendship and their care during this difficult time. Dr. Joe graduated from the University of Tampa and Loyola University School of Dentistry. He did his graduate work in Maxillofacial Prosthedontics at Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in New York City. He entered the Florida National Guard at age 16 because all the boys in his neighborhood were being drafted for the Korean War. He retired from the U.S. Air Force in 1991, as a Lieutenant Colonel having served in Operation Desert Storm and completing 31 years of service. He was awarded the Meritorious Service Medal. He was a member of the Hillsborough County Dental Society, Florida Dental Association, American Prosthedontic Society, and American Equibration Society. A memorial Mass will take place at 2 p.m. Monday, June 22, at Christ the King Catholic Church, Monsignor Desmond Daly, Pastor, celebrant. A burial is planned at Arlington National Cemetery alongside his wife. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Mary Help of Christians Center or LifePath Hospice.

We still can't belive he is gone. He was truly a great man and I enjoyed getting to know him and speking with him often since my dad took over his practice on Davis Island. My prayers are you at this time of your loss. We have a picture of him with my father when he first sold his practice up in the office, they are both all smiles! God bless!

I remember the Martineaus as warm hosts and excellent parents who raised a son to be a good friend. My thoughts are with you Sean.

Dear Sean, I am so deeply saddened by your Dad's passing. It is entirely my fault that I was not aware of his illness. Mart and I spent much of the winter in Colorado and were living at the beach when in the Tampa area when we returned in April. I should have called but, sadly didn't. We are back in Colorado for the summer. I am writing this from your Dad's Colorado bedroom, which is my office. I can still see him here and his early morning breakfast making. What a wonderful person he was.

As you know, we were very close to your parents and your Dad and I were especially close until recent years. I loved both of them and will miss them dearly. Mart sends her condolences as well as her love to you.
