Our Friend Joe, who we affectionately still call Gumpy, starting 1st Grade in 1951 Joe and Bob Guarente, Doc, went to St. Mary's School, would talk about St. Mary's every time they got together for breakfast, lunch, reunions, joked that both would not have been successes had they not gone to St. Mary's School where the Sisters taught them to be good, fair and decent. Joe and Doc to this day love St. Mary's School. We are 1963 Winchester High School Graduates, Joe served in the Navy during the Viet Nam era from 1965 to 1969, went to University of Massachusetts, had a career in Sales with Liberty Mutual Insurance. Joe is so proud of his Teacher Daughter Becky and Son Ryan, a Stoneham Police Officer. He was the best Father, proudly made sacrifices in countless ways for Becky and Ryan, was still talking about them when Joe left us last week. Those of us submitting this Condolence are among a special group of friends from at least back to McCall Junior High, we were all together at Winchester High School, at a number of past Winchester High School Reunions, at Get Togethers at Doc's Cross Street Home, and most recently in October 2013, during that weekend we all had a lunch Saturday morning at the 99 Restaurant at Woburn Corner, and were all together at the Reunion Dinner, presentations and skit at Woburn Country Club, fittingly with the Red Sox playing the World Series. For decades Joe and Doc got together at least once a week, often as much as four times a week. They did lunch, sometimes just go for donuts and sometimes for what Joe called a "full breakfast," meaning bacon and eggs at Cousins restaurant in Woburn Center, when Cousins closed at Friendly's in Stoneham. Joe and Dick are still sports fans of 4 major local teams, together they used to call Upton Bell, Bob Lobel and Guy Mainella sports radio talk shows with trade ideas, manager and coach firing recommendations, it was like Joe and Dick owned those teams. Joe enjoyed traveling with Son Ryan to Major League Baseball games in different cities, was a huge fan of Ohio State Buckeyes Football where Becky and Ryan's Mother Pam graduated and of Notre Dame Football. Joe leaves so many friends from his successful career with Liberty Mutual. He loved movies, saw way more movies than even Doc and Dick, knew the names of all the actors and movies, even recent movies, still seeing movies in theaters with Ryan. Joe is definitely proud of his Irish Heritage. Joe kept up on daily news, reading newspapers, faithfully watching TV news programs, even without the internet, knew everything happening Winchesterwide, Commonwealthwide and Nationally; was capable of discussing any issue. He loved his friends, Joe and Doc were only blocks away; Chief Rich Lindsey and Dick Cervizzi with AF Careers all over would still get together whenever East, others living in Tewksbury, Lompoc, Colorado Springs then Dallas, in Western Massachusetts, in New Hampshire, in Maine, we still saw each other when whenever we could, Joe thought of, loved and talked to and about all of us friends, Joseph and Marilyn Curran and Doc in the Computer industry, Dick with his AFJAG and private law practice, Paul Klorer with his successful sports apparel screening business, John Stabile with his Development and Construction Business. in the Legislature in New Hampshire, John was on National News Shows when President Bush appointed John Sununu as White House Chief of Staff, Steve Gray who went to St. Michael's College in Vermont with Dick and died too early. old photos of St. Mary's School days show Joe and Doc standing next to each other, all these years we are friends, as Joe said "no favorites." Joe delivered flowers for years, most recently for Jen and Stems Flower Shop. When Joe's rosary beads came apart, he immediately had them repaired. Becky and Ryan, we'll all miss Your Father, hope wonderful memories which all of us will hang onto tightly will make it a little easier for the two of You!
