Dear folks,

I am so sorry to hear about Joe's passing.

I remember Joe with great affection as a gentle, kind and soft spoken man, and still have wonderful memories of his friendship with my Dad. At Matty's 30th surprise birthday party in 1954, Joe gave him a large adjustable wrench. (Well remembered as it was captured on one of Rita's home movies.) They bought a small blue Evinrude outboard motor together so they could go fishing and save on the boat rental fees.

And, of course, his kindness and sharing - artist to artist - with Carol is remembered with deep gratitude.

***

I'm so glad that we were neighbors and friends all those years ago.

My condolences and my fondest thoughts are with you all.

Neil

I loved the JS's illustrations. The memoriam in the NYTimes brought back so many happy memories. God Bless

Dear Schindelman Family:
I was Joe's secretary in 1978. I remember him as one of the kindest men I had ever known. My sympathies to you all. Best, Judy Isserlis
