Knew him by reputation only. I called once to ask him a question and tried to hurry off.... Joe said . I'm not busy, what are you building? And we talked for 20 minutes. Amazing man, had no idea who I was but was interested in what I was doing. #1 in my book.
I'll never forget him.

Got to know Joe right after I moved to Ca in the mid 70´s through his dad who was my TV repairman . Bought an engine from him back then that I think is still being used in the car I put it in ( have since sold it .

I just discovered his passing.
Built my 383 stroker in 2011. I was always impressed by his technical abilities and his ability to relate to a common person such as myself.
One of the greats. I would have loved to play cards with him.

Joe was a great person and we had great times racing. I'm glad I still have 3 motors he did while we were having lots of fun with the 409's and our traveling across the country.

My condolences on Joe's passing. 20 yrs ago I called for help. He answered the phone, and told me what I needed to know. Excusing myself saying "I know you're busy, I'll let you go". He said No, it's slow here. Then started asking me about myself, my cars, my projects, my family.... 30 minutes! I am still blown away by what a fine person he was to me. I for one will never forget his humanity. Thanks.

I met Joe many years ago when he contacted our company regarding a crate for a motor that he had built. I was not aware at the time that I was in the presence of a legend. After our initial meeting, I came to find out that he was a much sought out engine builder with fans and customers worldwide. He attained many awards and accolades for his skills and knowledge of motors, and he was as well know for his signature look, which consisted of gray sweatpants and a white T-shirt, that was Joe. I was introduced this weekend to his family whom he always expressed much pride in. It was always a pleasure when Joe would stop by the shop, as he always had a youthful twinkle in his eye and a smile. It is a pleasure to call him a friend and he will be missed by all who knew him.

I had just entered my teens when my sister Melinda introduced me to her new boyfriend Joe Sherman "ha-ha...Mindy has a boyfriend" my brother and I would tease.
From then on, Joe Sherman became my hero. He is the reason why I got so interested with Auto Shop in high school. I remember bragging to my classmates that Joe Sherman was my brother-in-law. Many weekends were spent at Lions Drag Strip watching Joe race and consistently beating his competition. I would collect auto racing magazines with articles written' up about this legendary drag racer called Joe Sherman and his Mean-Green Auto Machine etc.ect.
Joe was a brutally honest human being. He always told you his real feelings. I remember conversations with him about a subject, and he would stop me in my tracts and say Where are you getting your facts? Joe was like the original Snopes.com. However, he never claimed that he had all the answers, but he had a keen sense of facts vs. fiction. Yes he was brutally honest and to the point.
Joe, you have left us in the physical world, but you will always live within my heart. All I need to do is close my eyes and you are there in hundreds of cherished moments.
Joe and his wife, Jenny, of almost 42 years.
