Joseph Tomko Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers from Apr. 10 to Apr. 12, 2016.
Joseph S. Tomko Sr., 87, of Dunmore, died Friday afternoon in the Dunmore Health Care Center. He is survived by his wife, the former Frances D'Arienzo. The couple would have celebrated 65 years of marriage on April 21.

Born in Dunmore, he was the son of the late Vincent and Mary Fenyak Tomko, and attended Dunmore public schools. He was a lifelong member of SS. Anthony and Rocco Parish, Dunmore, and was a Navy veteran of the Korean War. He was the superintendent of the Pennsylvania Gas and Water Co. for 42 years and upon his retirement, he served in the Security Division of DeNaples Auto Parts Inc., Dunmore.

He was a member of McHugh-Bushweller VFW Post 3474 and the Dunmore Lions Club. He was a hard- working, dedicated husband and father. He was so proud of his family, especially his grandchildren, who were the light of his life. He took his job very seriously and handled his position with honor and professionalism. Very skilled in carpentry, plumbing and masonry, Mr. Tomko was always ready to help friends with home projects. He was one of the last surviving members of the Roosey Gang, a group of neighborhood men whom he considered his extended family. He treasured their friendship and the many good times they shared together.

The family wishes to thank his physician for over 25 years, Dr. Enrico Serine, the wonderful staff at Dunmore Health Care Center, Dr. Nicholas Dodge and the staff at Sheeley's Pharmacy.

Also surviving are sons, Gerard and wife, Margaret, Hatboro; and Joseph S. Jr., Dunmore; grandchildren, Amy Magazu and husband, Joseph, West Deptford, N.J.; Brian Tomko and wife, Olivia, East Norriton; Kyle and Ann Marie Tomko, Dunmore; great-grandchildren, Charlie and Natalie Tomko; a niece, a nephew and cousins.

He was also preceded in death by an infant son, Anthony; sisters, Agnes Thomas and Rita Junz; and a brother, Bernard.

The funeral will be Wednesday from the Carlucci-Golden-DeSantis Funeral Home Inc., 318 E. Drinker St., Dunmore, with Mass at 9:30 a.m. in St. Anthony's Church, Smith Street, Dunmore. Interment, Dunmore Cemetery.

Friends may call today from 4 to 8 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to St. Joseph's Center, 2010 Adams Ave., Scranton, PA 18509.
