Joseph Winkleman Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Sep. 11, 2024.
It is with much sadness that the family of Joseph F. Winkleman announces his passing on the morning of August 22, 2024, at the age of 89.

Joseph, affectionately known by many as Papa Joe, passed away peacefully in his Orland Park home in the care of his wife, Priscilla (Petey) Winkleman, and his daughter, Darlene DiPasquale.

Born to Helen and George Winkelman on July 20, 1935, Joseph spent his teenage years dedicated to coaching basketball and playing baseball. After graduating from De La Salle High School, he went on to have a successful career in sales where he was a regional manager over five different branches. He could be found driving a local school bus after retirement, where he was a cherished fan-favorite driver of kids and parents alike.

While Joseph had been battling pulmonary hypertension since 2016, he never let it get in the way of sharing his love, humor, and knowledge with all those around him. He was known for his award-winning smile, kind Irish eyes, quick wit and resilience in the face of numerous challenges throughout his life.

Joseph was a collector, not of objects, but of passions. He enjoyed reading and had a fierce love for golf. He could often be found looking up tidbits of family history or catching up on his favorite television shows. He loved music, snowmobiling, and working with his hands. Joseph had a deep love for this country. His largest collection though, and one he leaves behind with his family, is a collection of fond memories.

Joseph is survived by his wife, Priscilla (Petey) Winkleman; his children, Debra Stewart (Matthew) and Darlene DiPasquale (Philip); his grandchildren, Isabella Polidoro, Emily Stewart, Peter Stewart, David Winkleman (Loan), Max Winkleman, Courtney Ticen (Colby), Valarie Winkleman, Vincent Mandarino, Alyssa Mandarino and Paula Mandarino; his great-grandchildren, Aiden Winkleman, Braylen Winkleman, Ayla Winkleman, Landon Winkleman, Ava Ticen and Ivy Ticen; and his sister, Patricia Ballard.

He is preceded in death by his children, Dawn and David; his parents, George and Helen, and his siblings, Rosemary, George, Virginia, and James.

A service will be held for Joseph at 10:00 am on Saturday, September 21, 2024, at Our Lady of the Woods Catholic Church (10731 W. 131st Street in Orland Park, Illinois) with a reception to follow at Papa Joe's Italian Restaurant (14459 LaGrange Road in Orland Park, Illinois).

The family is asking that, in lieu of flowers, donations be made in Joseph's name to the Pulmonary Hypertension Association to help further research and support those diagnosed with the condition. https://phassociation.org

I loved you the first time I met you. Thank you for making me your wife - and the joy and tears of our four children. Everything we had to learn to get through 65 years of marriage. I will love you always and keep you in my heart forever and ever. Love, Petey

I have so many fond memories of Grandpa, I don't even know where to start. From his jokes, to the enthusiasm he showed every time we visited, to the adoption of the nick name "Greengrup" because someone in our family couldn't say "Grandpa" (I can't even remember who it was!), to the waves of photos we'd get as he sorted through them (some of them hilariously photoshopped), and of course his red cup always filled with Pepsi and ice. I am thankful for the visits we've had over the years, and I will greatly miss Grandpa's presence at future visits. Joe left a legacy of joy and laughter, and will always be in all our hearts.

What I remember most about Joe when I was a kid was the big Mark threes Mark 4S he used to drive. I thought they were the coolest . He always treated us kids with respect and gave us a good laugh. He was a great guy. Will all miss him My deepest sympathy to you and your family. Joe Swatkowski and Family

It's hard to figure out what to write about someone like my grandfather, Joseph. He was someone that was full of life, love, and enough stories to fill up several books. We had very different views on the world, but no matter what those were, he still had a huge smile on his face when he'd see me walk in the room. I will miss his presence at our weekly dinners, discussions about whatever television show had piqued his interest at the time, his perfect rendition of The Birthday Song. (If you know, you know.)

Rest easy, Grandpa. I love you.

On the day of my fathers funeral I told Joe that he was the only Dad I've got left. That really touched his heart. Whenever he'd see me, even up the the very end, he'd always give me a big smile. He was a man to be admired and I only wish I'd gotten to know him sooner. The Winkleman house just isn't the same without him; he will be dearly missed.

Joseph was a great father to me. I wasn´t the most pleasant person to be around growing up, but Dad always had my back. He was always kind, loving and supportive, and he spoiled the heck out of me. I loved him fiercely my entire life and I will always miss him. It was the greatest honor and privilege of my life to care for him when he needed me. Rest easy, Dad.
