Joseph Woods Obituary
Joe was born in Milroy, Indiana to Melvin and Mary Woods on October 11, 1929. He graduated from Indiana University where he met his beloved wife of nearly 64 years, Avis Murrell. Together they raised their 3 children and enjoyed watching their grandchildren grow. Joe served the legal community in Indianapolis as an attorney for 45 years, and he generously shared his wisdom with others long after he retired at age 79. He also served his Franklin Township community as a longtime member of the school board, and he was a dedicated member of Southminster Presbyterian Church for 59 years. In his later years, Joe relished riding his tractor, cheering for IU basketball, eating ice cream, and sharing his colorful life stories with friends and family!
Joe was preceded in death by his parents, brother Philip, and wife Avis. He is survived by his sister Patsy Hagen, son John and daughter-in-law Susan, son Edward, daughter Ann Bruehl and son-in-law Terry, and grandchildren Jack, Kate, Elizabeth and William.
A Celebration of Joe's Life will be held at 1:30pm on Friday, October 11, at Southminster Presbyterian Church at 9950 Southeastern Ave., Indianapolis, IN. Joe has been interred at Arlington East Hill Cemetery in Arlington, IN in a private family service.
Memorial donations may be made to Native American Heritage Association. We respectfully request no flowers. The family extends deep gratitude and love to Carla Bodkins who lovingly cared for Joe in his final year.
