ZUCCARO
JOSEPH ANTHONY
Of Aspinwall, passed away peacefully at home on January 15, 2018, following a brief illness. Born on November 17, 1933, Joe was the youngest child of Antonina Battaglia Zuccaro and Agostino Zuccaro. A graduate of Aspinwall High School class of 1951, Joe attended The Pennsylvania State University, where he was a member of Alpha Phi Delta Fraternity. He served in the Army during the Korean War and upon his discharge entered the family business. Joe spent his entire career as proprietor of the Brilliant Market in Aspinwall. The market, which contributed significantly to the life and vibrancy of downtown Aspinwall, was founded in 1922 by Joe's parents. The store remained in the family until Joe's retirement in 1999 - a 77 year history of providing quality food and impeccable service to customers and friends in Aspinwall and surrounding areas. Joe will be most remembered for the role that he played in mentoring and educating young people employed by the store over five decades. He stressed the importance of showing initiative, serving others and, most of all, that kindness matters. Joe lived the golden rule every day - "Do unto others as you would have them do unto you." Joe's faith was extremely important to him. He was a lifetime member of St. Scholastica Church were he served as a Eucharistic Minister and was also a member of the Knights of Columbus. Joe was predeceased by his beloved wife of 55 years Barbara (Shearer) Zuccaro; brothers Anthony, August and Samuel Zuccaro and sister Mary Legath. He is survived by his sister, Lillian Ranii of Aspinwall and his four adoring children Beth Goetz (Lynn Yocum), Nina Waters (Lex), August Zuccaro (Susan) and Barbara Jo Murray (John). He felt blessed to have eight loving and talented grandchildren, Alex Waters (Erika), Bryan Goetz (Sarah Obuzor), Christian Goetz, Lindsay Zuccaro, Nina Zuccaro, Natalie Murray, Jack Murray and Evan Murray. Joe and Barb were also blessed with two "children" who each lived with them for a year as foreign exchange students - John Thyne (Darwin, Australia) and Maguis Fernandez (Chihuahua, Mexico). They have both stayed engaged with Joe and his family over these many years. The family will be forever grateful to Rob Goetz for providing love and care for Joe in the past few months. The family will receive friends Sunday, January 28, 2018 , from 2-6 p.m. at the WEDDELL-AJAK FUNERAL HOME,100 Center Ave., Aspinwall. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Monday, January 29, 2018, at 10:00 a.m. at St. Scholastica Church, 309 Brillliant Ave., Aspinwall. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be directed to the Green Grocer Program of the Greater Pittsburgh Community Food Bank, 1 North Linden Street, Duquesne, PA 15110.

My Dear Uncle Joe,
You were always the light and laughter of the Zuccaro Family,a soft place to fall in hard times, and a pillar of strength during challenges. I will always remember your being a second Dad to me and Rege when our own Dad was sick. Your smile and laugh will always be in my heart. You were a fixture in our town and a wonderful role model to all of us, you lived your values, family, loyalty, and integrity.
You will be forever missed and forever remembered.

Dear Zuccaro Family,

Please accept my heartfelt sympathies at Joe's passing.

I've known him literally all my life, since my mom would take me into the Brilliant Market as a young boy.

Joe was the first person to teach me how to cook, making pizza from scratch!

Later, when we formed Foxwall EMS, Joe and his beloved Barbara(BZ!) Gus and Beth helped to form the service(as charter members)and volunteered in many capacities to make the community a better place to live. They made many sacrifices for their love of Aspinwall.

I'll always have fond memories seeing them waving at the ambulance from their chairs at Fourth and Maple, during the annual Memorial Day Parade.

Please know that my thoughts and prayers will be with you, as you grieve in sadness, but celebrate and cherish the memories of a life well lived.

Eternal Rest and Perpetual Light Joe!

Deepest condolences,

Uncle Joe, no words could ever express how much your love & support has meant to me over my life, especially when Dad went to Viet Nam. I will always cherish the memories of the Brilliant Market--BEST slab bacon ever!--, going to the yards with you & of course the Pittsburgh Steelers! Your kindness, your big heart, your humor we will miss most of all. I love you. Amy

Daddy, I am so fortunate to have had you as a father. You've taught me kindness, patience and unconditional love. Through your example I've learned hard work does pay off, to treat people how I want to be treated and not to ask someone to do something I wouldn't do myself.
While I will mourn your loss, I take comfort knowing you are with Mom. Remembering your smile, jokes and pranks will surely get me through.
I love you a bushel and a peck and a hug around the neck.

Feeling so blessed that God made you my Daddy. You taught me so much - how to be a caring person, how to deal with difficult people, how to be humble and kind, the importance of working hard and always doing your best. Most importantly, through your example, I learned how to make a marriage last and how to be a good parent. I will keep you in my heart forever.
