Joy Henderson Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jul. 23, 2024.
We are saddened to share that our mother, Joy Simmons Henderson, passed away on Sunday June 16th, 2024. She was at home with her husband of 52 years, John Marshel Henderson and her children and siblings at her side on a beautiful spring day, her young grandchildren playing in the yard outside her window.

Joy was born on December 20, 1953, in Monroe, Louisiana, to Donald Emmanuel Simmons and Laura Flournoy Simmons. Joy lived the promise of her name with a warm smile, kind words, and hugs freely offered to anyone in her presence.

Joy grew up in Baton Rouge, Louisiana and attended the First Church of Christ Scientists with her older sister Mary F. Simmons, and younger brother Robert A. Simmons. At that church they met the Henderson family, and Joy grew up in Sunday school with John Henderson, who she later would marry.

Joy graduated from Robert E. Lee High School in Baton Rouge, Louisiana in 1971, and one year later married John. Joy obtained a bachelor of science degree from Louisiana State University College of Education in 1974.

Their first child, Marshel Andrew Henderson, was born in 1974 in Dallas, Texas. Michael E. was born two years later in Dallas, Texas in 1976.

The family moved to Royal Oak Michigan where John and Joy were teachers at the private Japhet School. In 1981, the family endured the passing of Marshel. Soon after the family moved to Littleton, Co.

In 1983 their first daughter, Carrie L., was born. Around the same time Joy opened an in-home pre-school in the family's basement that served a number of families with not just daycare, but structured early childhood education. This was Joy's true passion and from that point she never stopped caring for children and fostering in them a love for reading. Callie R. was born in 1986 shortly before the family moved to Bakersfield, California.

Joy always had a clear mission in life to be an educator, so she registered as a graduate student at California State University Bakersfield. She worked as a student teacher, attended classes and completed graduate coursework, all with three school-aged children. She graduated with a Master of Arts Degree in Education-Curriculum and Instruction in 1990 and began her career teaching in the Greenfield School District in rural Bakersfield, CA.

Joy taught kindergarten, 1st grade and 6th grade as well as being a mentor teacher and university professor towards the end of her career.

When Joy retired from professional teaching in 2012, Joy and John moved to Reno, Nevada. Michael, Carrie and Callie had moved there in the early 2000's.

Joy quickly took on the role of preschool teacher to her 2-year-old grandsons, Elliott Bushá and Bowie Henderson, both born in 2010.

For the the rest of her life Joy continued to care for and teach her grandchildren reading, writing and basic preschool lessons. Joy again made bespoke lesson materials for each child, including flash cards, books, posters, custom games and lessons, saving many as mementos of her time with each of them. Nash Henderson came into her care in 2014, Emma McCartney in 2018, Dana McCartney in 2021 and Zoey McCartney in 2024.

In Reno Joy began new adventures in the mountains around Lake Tahoe. She was an avid hiker, heading out on early morning hikes from nearby trails with her friends, snapping photos of wildflowers and plants, and tracking her adventures on Strava and posting selfies to the families shared photo album.

She cultivated friendships readily and happily with her cheerful, welcoming presence. She would approach strangers at trailheads, around the neighborhood, at the library or when meeting the parents of her children's friends. Once a new potential hiking or cycling friend was identified it was unlikely she would let the opportunity to add them to her list of adventure partners slip by.

Joy began road and mountain biking in her retirement and never stopped striving to develop skills and strength on the trails and hills around her home. Her social calendar was ever full of riding days with family and friends.

Chief among her adventure companions was husband. John was her patient companion on hiking and cycling outings, encouraging her sometimes slow and shaky wanderings, and staying by her side as they both reached their goal, and then found their way back to the trailhead.

In 2023 Joy spearheaded a trip to Kauai, Hawaii, which was a lifelong dream of hers. Joy loved spending time with everyone on the beach, in warm water, hiking the rugged trails of the Na Pali coast and paddling the serene Wailua river.

Her greatest joy in life came from outdoor adventures with her family, including all the grandchildren. For her last great trip she and John traveled to Moab, Utah with their children's families, including 5 grandchildren, for a week of mountain biking, hiking and exploring.

Joy is survived by her husband John, son Michael, daughters Carrie Bushá, and Callie, and her 6 beloved grandchildren.

A Memorial Service will be held at Galena Creek Park in Reno, NV on September 15th 2024.

I just thought of her today and googled her name and was sad to see that she passed away last year. I was in the credential that she was in charge of a Cal State Bakersfield. She was a wonderful instructor, so supportive, so committed to our wonderful profession. The preparation we received was excellent. She instilled in us that commitment to lifelong learning. She was a treasure and I am very grateful I got to know her in this capacity.

Joy was an inspiring lady in so many ways. I remember meeting her when I was a student teacher many years ago. The way she ran her classroom was impressive.
Later we became bike riding friends who encouraged each other to keep at it and keep improving. I have so many great memories of us riding bikes together.
I admired Joy for her dedication to her family and enjoyed hearing about the many outdoor adventures they had together. She seemed like a big sister who inspired me in so many ways. I am thankful that Joy was my friend.

Keeping John and Family in my thoughts and prayers. I remember Joy always greeted people with a smile and watching us as children playing on the metal slide in Greenwell Springs. Judy

Joy has been in my heart lately, before I received this beautiful letter and pictures in the mail. What perfect celebrations you all are sharing with us who loved her. Before I left Reno in 2020, Joy and I had worked on various great ideas for our church. One of them was learning how to use the Zoom features giving several challenges with our existing technology. And Joy was one of the early members who sent out the email announcements prior to our services and meetings, so every time I received that email, Joy's spirit of enthusiasm and loving embrace would wrap themselves further in my heart, and bring fresh smiles to my face. Joy's amazing ability to create and shepherd our Summer Bible Camp bubbles up in my memory for all that she packed into a 1/2 day, 3-4 day camp that was amazing in variety, and child-view fun. Those children who came will always have the grip they gained on things like the 10 Commandments and the Beatitudes, and more. I love Joy's example of welcoming new-comers to our church and immediately including them into one of her many hiking-biking-snow shoeing- inner tubing dates, and was so generous loaning gear to all who need sox here, boots there, gators as needed, etc. One of my really cherished sunny Reno days with Joy and our mutual friend Marilyn was an inner-tubing afternoon down the Truckee River. The water had been adjusted by the Water Master to have just enough water to float, but not enough to be dangerous. That was great because somehow the paddle didn't make it's expected place in the car, so we found some tree branches to push ourselves around the rocks. It was the only time I have gone inner-tubing since very early childhood, and may be my last time, but it was such a golden, glorious day! I thank Joy regularly in my heart for that "holy" and joyful day together, and for all the gear she loaned me to enable me to go to Christmas Family Welcome Home at Adventure Unlimited one year, with all the winter gear I needed to borrow. Another generous blessing. Her overflowing love, as has been enjoyed by so many, was so natural and so spontaneous, precious and unforgettable. Thank you, Henderson Family, for including me in your open arms and for appreciating Joy so deeply. Even if I can't be with you in September, I will be with you and with her happily enriched and expanded in every department, due to her gentle example. I don't have any photos to send, but I thank you all for the photos you sent. I am so grateful to approximate even a teaspoon of the fine qualities Joy represents and shared with me and others. Lovingly, Caryn (McCoy)(Hawman) Maize. Windsor, CA

I shared so many great memories with Joy and John and I am so deeply saddened to learn of Joy´s passing! Joy taught me so many of life´s most valuable lessons and also introduced me to some of my most beloved books. Briefly- lessons learned from Joy;
Always assume the best intentions,
Make time to create memories,
Be willing to try new things,
never give up!!

Joy truly brought Joy to all!! Such a very special friend and mentor!

Joy was my supervisor during my time in the credential program at CSUB, where she guided me through the professional development school partnership with Greenfield School District. Not only was she my supervisor, but she was also my instructor for several of my classes. Joy was always there to answer questions, offer guidance, and cheer us on through every challenge. I learned so much from her, and she was truly an amazing person. I will forever remember the kindness she showed to all of her students and the positive impact she had on my life. I am so sorry for your loss, and my thoughts are with your family during this difficult time.

I' m so sorry to hear of Joy's passing. I was a bridesmaid at her wedding. My husband and I and our first two children were able to connect with the Joy and family while they were in Littleton. I am sad that we were never able to meet up since then; however, we exchanged Christmas cards. She was one of my good friends in high school. We were in Confederettes together and she lived very close by while we were in high school. My heart felt love to the family.

I am so sorry to hear of Joy´s passing. We were friends from church, the neighborhood & attended Lee High School in Baton Rouge together.
I remember one Mardi Gras in New Orleans when our parents set a group of us teenagers free to explore. It was when Joy was definitely smitten with John & so happy. Our families will ever be joined through our mutual love & respect.

My son, David is married to Joy´s daughter, Carrie. My late husband and I shared many Thanksgiving holidays with the Henderson family as well as other family gatherings. Joy always had a smile and a hug for anyone in her presence, adults and children alike. I truly believe she was the kindest person I have ever known. It was my privilege to have shared in a small portion of her life. I will miss you, my friend, Joy.
My heart breaks for her family who loves her so! Joy believed fervently that the spirit lives past death, on to eternal life with God and her family who went before her.
