ODE TO JOY MASSAD

We lost a long-time friend today:
Joy Massad has passed away;
Old friends recall his youthful days,
Happy smiles and jovial ways.
He laughed a lot and joked with all,
A big Texan, stood straight and tall;
People liked him, 'twas plain to see,
Others loved him, and so did we.
In the Army, he served with pride,
Those years with our flag by his side;
It's with contused, revered remorse,
And grief we bid "Goodbye," of course;
Though his last breath, his sun has set,
His long friendship, none will forget.
Behind he left fond memories,
Love of family, one of these;
But now at peace and end to pain,
Angels hold him where none will wane,
And he with God will humbly wait
Till he greets us at heaven's gate.

Hanging in my closet to this day is a herringbone tweed Tallia Italian jacket from J. Massads in the Green Acres Village from sometime in the 60's. Sold to me by a man of honor who always had a smile, a handshake and a hug whenever he saw you whether in the store or around town. His was an era when one bought their clothing from a personal friend who knew your name and valued your friendship and patronage. Joy Massad will always be remembered as a Tyler tradition dating back so very many years and with few exceptions, I don't think that I ever saw him with anything other than a big smile on his face. I'll keep the jacket forever and will never forget J. Massad's in my old hometown of Tyler, TX.
