Joyce Field Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Sep. 24, 2024.
Brooklyn - Joyce Wolf Field was born October 1, 1932, to Abraham and Bella Wolf (née Kestenbaum) in the Bronx, New York. The family moved to Detroit, MI in 1937, where she received all her early education. Joyce passed away on September 19, 2024, at the age of 91, on her beloved husband's birthday, who predeceased her.

Joyce was married to Leslie "Les" Field for almost 60 years. She is survived by her daughter Lynda, of Brooklyn, NY and her son Jeffrey and his wife Cathryn, of Los Angeles, CA as well as 3 grandchildren, Luna, Dylan, and Collin. She was a devoted and loving wife, mother, grandmother and aunt and loyal friend to many people in the community. She lived in West Lafayette for 60 years and after briefly relocating to Los Angeles with her son's family moved to live with her daughter and granddaughter in Brooklyn.

Joyce graduated with a BA, Magna Cum Laude from Wayne State University with a degree in English, where she met her husband Les, and they did graduate work at Indiana University and Purdue University. She and her husband shared an interest in Thomas Wolfe and 20th century American Jewish writers, Bernard Malamud, Saul Bellow, and Philip Roth and published numerous books and articles on these authors. She was a member of Phi Beta Kappa.

Joyce taught at the Krannert School of Business at Purdue and held a variety of positions in the private and public sector, including running the CETA program in Tippecanoe County and the County Senior Center, and working as an executive at local tech startup MDBS. Her last position, as VP of Research and Data Acquisition with JewishGen, she often said was her favorite position of them all. She initiated new avenues of Jewish genealogy research, lectured widely on the subject, and received international awards and recognition in Time Magazine for her efforts. Joyce initiated projects which used new and emerging technologies so people could discover their roots and loved to connect with and be a resource for people worldwide who were engaged in Holocaust research.

Joyce was a Holocaust scholar, followed current events closely and was also a tireless advocate for progressive political causes and women's rights. She was active in many community and political organizations including The League of Women Voters. She shared a passion for and encyclopedic knowledge of opera with her father. She was a gourmet cook/baker, aficionado of fine wine, loved great conversation, the arts, and to read and travel. In high school, Joyce was an all-city violinist, and she resumed playing 72 years later at age 90. Joyce only recently learned the word "retirement." Everyone who met her fondly recalls her laughter and remembers her enthusiasm, energy, wide range of interests, passionate advocacy, and intellectual rigor. She will be sorely missed and would want to tell everyone to get out and vote.

Services will be private. Donations in her memory can be made to Planned Parenthood and League of Women Voters.

Joyce is my husband's closest DNA match from the FamilyFinder test at FamilyTreeDNA. I communicated with her in the past, but never realized at the time how involved she was in JewishGen. We never figured out which family line the connection might be on, but my husband's Taffet ancestors came from the an area close to Debica -- possibly Ropczyce or Kolbuszowa. My condolences to her family and friends.

Tomorrow would have been Joyce´s. 92nd birthday. I met Joyce through the Greater Lafayette Holocaust Remembrance Conference. She spoke many years ago about Jewish genealogy. I ran across the handout she gave her audience recently. Joyce had such enthusiasm in her voice as she told us the many resources available for our searches. I had only this brief exposure to Joyce´s wealth of knowledge but it left a deep impression on me. May her memory be forever a blessing.

I worked to together over many years with Joyce z"l in the JewishGen Yizkor Book Project. She was, in the beginning, my mentor but with time, she also became a dear friend. In our working relationship and as friends, she was always responsive, understanding and caring.

During her leadership in the Yizkor Book Project, she paid particular attention to maintaining the highest quality translations and worked closely with the coordinators and translators to achieve just this. There were no half measures where she was concerned and any translation added to the project had to be just right.

Her contribution to the JewishGen Yizkor Book Project is extremely significant and the foundations that she laid are the basis of what we are familiar with today.

Above all, she was a kind person, a "mensch" and even after she was no longer active in JewishGen, she continued to regularly send me words of encouragement regarding our progress in the project.

To note that she will be badly missed, is a huge understatement and may her memory be blessed.

I do not remember the first time i met Joyce but she always made such a vivid impression! She was one of the most joyful, gregarious and friendly people I have ever met! She could talk about anything to anybody and when you talked with her she treated you like the most important person she had ever met! She and Les were both so warm and welcoming and we (and our kids) loved seeing them whenever they visited! She will be missed, but she has left a permanent impression on my heart. God bless you Joyce, happy Les and you are together again!

So very sorry for your loss. She clearly led a rich and impressive life, and enjoyed a lot of love.

My first memory of Joyce was when I was a service technician for DirecTV. I was there to fix a malfunctioning receiver. She sent me on my way with so many items including desserts.

I ended up coming back multiple times throughout the years helping with various electronics and we developed a great friendship.

Everytime - I would show up and opera music was playing and she would be yelling for me to come on in. We would sit and chat about music and history and wine and how proud she was of her kids and grandchildren. She would tell me about the latest Apple product she had and I would leave knowing more about Les, who I never had the pleasure of meeting.

Joyce quickly became a grandmother figure for my kids and a dear friend to my wife. Many many many dinners she prepared for us and spoiled us with great wine. I can still see her sitting back in her chair with a glass of wine listening to all the noise...all with a smile on her face.

Joyce and Lynda were family for me while I was in West Lafayette, and I will never forget how wonderful she was for me and my family.

I will always cherish those day. Thank you Joyce! Rest peacefully!
