I met Johnny when I was researching the neighborhood for walking tours I give. I loved talking to him as each of us was born in and loved NYC and had many interesting stories to share. I last saw Johnny when he returned to the Dakota in September, and it broke my heart to learn of his passing in December.

My name is Sam. I grew up with Johnny on 135st. We went to grade school together. And we grew up in the crazy times in the 80's. We always had fun hanging out together. Johnny was always smiling and laughing and he always made everyone feel like a good friend which was special. The picture I attached shows Johnny, Nelson, Tracy and myself hanging out behind the building numbered 3333. Everyone wore a leather bomber back then. When I became a Christian I witnessed to Francis who was with Johnny at the time and they had Joshua. She gave her life to the Lord. It wasn't long after that Johnny also gave his life in baptism to Jesus. The years passed and we lost touch. Although I would try to look him up to reconnect. I was happy to hear the Johnny returned to the Lord and I am sure that he is in the care of Jesus right now. The Lord is able to save all that come to him. I pray for the family that they can find comfort in these days. But Johnny gave us a lot to remember and those memories are joyful. PEACE TO ALL.

Johnny was a beloved member of the Dakota family and one of the bravest people I´ve ever met. he created a home and a safe haven for everyone that lives here and came across his wonderful smile and indomitable spirit. May he rest in peace. He will never be forgotten.
