Judith Goodell Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Jun. 2, 2025.
Judith Ellen Goodell, 87, passed away peacefully on May 31, 2025, in Fort Myers, Florida. A beloved wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, and cherished friend, Judith lived a full life that included hard work, family time and a love of nature.

Born and raised in Connecticut, Judith attended Wethersfield schools and later achieved her bachelor's degree from New Hampshire College-an accomplishment she pursued later in life as a testament to her deep belief in the value of education. Her determination served as an enduring example to her grandchildren and those who knew her well.

Judith's life journey took her from the shores of Connecticut to the coasts of California, Maine and eventually to retirement in Florida. Her love for the ocean was a constant throughout her life. Whether near the Atlantic or Pacific or her family camp on Long Pond, she found peace by the water. In retirement, she continued this passion by sailing model boats with the Cypress Cove Yacht Club crew, accompanied by her husband Albert Spangenberg-her steadfast first mate.

She was a proud and loving mother to her daughter Cynthia A. Lyons and her husband William, and to her son James C. Dougherty. Her legacy continues through her grandchildren: Kristina Aikens (Herbert), William Lyons IV (Ashley), and Thomas Lyons (Sarah); and through her great-grandchildren: Haleigh, Hannah, Herbie, Cali, Sadie, Dylan, and Chloe. Judith also leaves behind her sister Carolyn Goodell; sister-in-law Janice Goodell; many nieces and nephews; and countless friends who were drawn to her warmth and wisdom.

Judith was predeceased by her brothers Robert Goodell and Sherman Goodell.

A Friend of Bill W for 48 years, Judith offered strength and support to many throughout nearly five decades of fellowship. Her presence was a source of comfort to those who walked alongside her on that path.

Judith's life was enriched by dear friends she made at every stage of her life; friends who became family to her. May her memory bring comfort to all who knew her. A Memorial Gathering will be held on June 11, 2025, at 03:00 PM at Cypress Cove 10200 Cypress Cove Drive. Edison Room

Classmates in high school, friends for life from our twenties on. In spite of several moves involving different states for both of us, over a period of nearly 70 years we managed to stay connected and see each other from time to time. Judy never knew her own strength or valued how smart she was but life with Al, becoming a grandmother and a great grandmother, she found her place. She is missed. Suzanne
