Julian Astion Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers from May 22 to May 23, 2023.
Julian Astion was born in the Bronx on July 17, 1929, to Russian immigrant parents George and Sarah. He had a colorful New York City childhood, where he became a basketball star at James Monroe High School, eventually getting offered a basketball scholarship for college. Instead, he served in the army in the Korean War as one of the most important people on the ship, a cook, where he honed his often-used skill of making food for very large gatherings of people. Upon his return, married the love of his life, Adele Slutzker on March 1, 1952. They soon moved to Clifton, NJ where Julie and his beloved cousin Lenny bought a popular luncheonette and candy store, the Carousel. After many long days at the Carousel and Lenny's early passing, Julie transitioned into the garment industry, working in the manufacturing, and selling of textiles. In that position, he had the privilege of traveling extensively in Asia and making lifelong friends on the other side of the world. In New Jersey, Adele and Julie raised 3 wonderful children, Audrey, Donna, and Michael. Adele and Julie worked hard, enjoyed life, and put the kids through public school, Hebrew school, college, and medical school. They were supporters of the Clifton Jewish Center and the Garment Center Congregation. They were also loving grandparents to seven granddaughters, as well as two great-granddaughters.

He always put his family first. At the Carousel, he would call his parents every day from the pay phone at the back of the store. In later years, he talked to his kids every day. He was a great friend to many and was quick with a funny story, a smile, and a laugh. All were welcome around him; all were safe and cared for, and all became part of the family. Adele Astion passed away in September 2020, and Julie talked about her glowingly every day until his own passing on May 15, 2023. Julian Astion will be dearly missed by everyone who had the good fortune of meeting him.
