Hanford resident Juliet Lorraine Mills Anderson passed away on Friday, Dec. 29, 2006.

Juliet was born July 17, 1927 in Honolulu, Hawaii. She moved to Long Beach at the age of six and went on to attend Huntington Beach High School. She married Carl H. Anderson on Jan. 2, 1946. the two enjoyed a deeply loving marriage for 57 years. The couple moved to Hanford in 1954.
Juliet, affectionately known as "Julie," earned a BA and a teaching credential from Fresno State. She taught English, social studies and literature at Woodrow Wilson Jr. High School in Hanford for many years.

Julie was a registered member of the Merriwether Society and a descendent of Merriwether Lewis of the Lewis and Clark expedition. She was also a member of other organizations and clubs, such as Phi Kappa Phi, AAUW, Readers' Forum, Kings County Democratic Committee, and the Friends of the Library of which she was a founding member and officer. For many years, Juliet was instrumental in encouraging children to read and write better by setting up the annual Friends of the Library Essay Contest in conjunction with the Hanford Elementary School District Curriculum. After retiring from teaching, Julie was involved in tutoring college-bound students. She was a gifted and published poet and was an inspired gardener. Her beautiful back yard was often the site of many pleasant gatherings.

She is survived by her son, Steve Anderson, and his wife, Jan; three grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. Julie was preceded in death by her husband, Carl Harvey, in 2003.

There will be a memorial gathering of Julie's family and friends at a later date.

Remembrances may be sent in Julie's name to the Friends of the Library, 401 N. Douty St., Hanford, CA 93230.

I would like to thank Mrs. Anderson for being a wonderful educator. Although I was not her best student, she was among a select handful of educators that I felt helped shape and improve my life.

Mrs. Anderson not only was a fantastic teacher of english, but also of critical thought.
