Juliette Chatterjee Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers from Jan. 9 to Jan. 11, 2007.
CHATTERJEE, Juliette (nee Theriault) July 30, 1935 - January 7, 2007 "A true woman's love is not conquered by death" Hindu Proverb On Sunday, January 7, 2007 Juliette left us to become an angel peacefully surrounded by her loving family after a valiant struggle with brain cancer. Beloved wife and soulmate of 50 years of Dr. Kam Chatterjee. "Super Mom" of Nina, Pierre, Susan (Greg Commons), Leila (Ken Ross) and Tony (John O'Neill). A doting and devoted grandmother, "Dida" will be fondly remembered by Melanie, Matthew and Rachael Manion, by Alexander, Amanda, Jordan and Christopher Commons, and by Andrew and Aidan Ross. Predeceased by her parents Emery and Jeannette as well as brothers Lucien and Hector. Survived by brothers Guy (Louiselle), Louis (Marie-France), and Gilles (Andre Bergeron) and by sister Gisele (Serge Kowsman). Juliette will be missed by many nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles, cousins and friends. Born in Edmundston, New Brunswick, she studied nursing at the University of Ottawa, graduating in 1956 near the top of her class. Married in December of the same year, she worked as a registered nurse in Ottawa, Kingston and Edmundston before settling in Ottawa to raise her family. Later in life, Juliette returned to her calling by volunteering for the Canadian Diabetes Association. A diabetic herself, she helped others cope with this disease through education, counselling, advocacy and fundraising. She served as President of the Ottawa and District Branch of the CDA from 1988 to 1991, and was frequently invited to speak on topics related to diabetes care. Juliette was an early user of glucometers and automatic infusion pumps for the management of her own diabetes. She joyfully shared the knowledge she acquired, instructing other diabetics in the proper care and use of these now commonplace devices. Wife, mother, nurse, teacher, Juliette will be remembered for her selfless devotion in the service of others, for her resolute courage in the face of adversity, for the unconditional love she lavished on her family, and - undoubtedly - for the best tomato chutney you've ever tasted. We will all miss this truly remarkable woman. The family wishes to extend their thanks to Dr. Garth Nicholas and the staff of the Ottawa Regional Cancer Centre, to Dr. Yvonne Kaethler and the 3rd floor staff at St. Vincent's Hospital, and to the Elizabeth Bruyere Palliative Care Unit for the high standard of care provided. A special and heartfelt thanks goes out to the many caring friends who comforted Juliette on the final leg of her journey. Friends may visit at the Central Chapel of Hulse, Playfair & McGarry, 315 MacLeod Street, Ottawa on Friday, January 12 from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. A Mass will be said in celebration of her life at Notre Dame Cathedral, Sussex Drive at St. Patrick St. on Saturday, January 13, 2007 at 12 noon, followed by a reception. In lieu of flowers the family requests that donations be made in Juliette's name to the Canadian Diabetes Association, the Ottawa Regional Cancer Centre Foundation, or the SCO Health Service Foundation. Dear Kamy and all the family,

Tante Paulette told me that your dearest Juliette had passed away on Sunday. During her illness, I had kept her in my prayers.

S. Marie-Claire Couture, O.P.

The death of a beloved
Risks to chop into pieces all in us.
Everything.
Except the heart…
For one’s love molds our heart.

And we already know, Juliette,
That beyond and in spite of the absence,
You will continue to knead our heart,
to soothe it with your voice,
to enlighten it with your smile…

I know how much you enjoyed a good laugh!
I’m sure, Juliette,
That you will continue,
With the same support and comfort,
to convey your loved ones,
Where songs and laughters
Will never be out of breath.

Your brother Gilles

Dear Leila and family,
My deepest sympathy to you and your family. You spoke many times of how difficult your mother's battle with cancer was. She was a brave woman. Be comforted that she is now at peace. Take comfort in the support of your friends and family and in all the special memories that you have. Leila, if I can help you in any way, please call.

I met Juliette but once. It was enough for me to know I was in the company of a lovely, caring woman. We chatted, shared stories and laughed in that short visit. My heartfelt sympathy goes to you Tony and to all of your family.

A mother is a special person in your life and I am glad you were blessed with such a special one as Juliette.

Thinking of you with love, Sheila

Dear Leila & family, words alone cannot express what I feel in my heart for you and your family. I offer you strength and courage and know that your Mom is surrounded by love and prayers. Support one another in this time of need and grief as there is nothing else as strong as family.

Tu aimais tellement rire ! Je le sais.
Puisses-tu, Juliette,
continuer d’amener les tiens,
avec la même assurance,
là où le chant et le rire
ne manquent jamais de souffle.

Gilles, ton jeune frère.

Dear Dr. Chatterjee and Family:
Tom joins me in sending our sympathy to you at this sad time in the loss of your wonderful wife and companion of 50 years.
As members of the "Riverside Family", we have many fond memories of the good times that we all enjoyed in the past at the various parties and functions. I also remember your brown bag lunches with the half sandwich that Juliette used to send to work with you.
May you and your family find comfort in the days ahead as you recall all your wonderful memories of your wife, and their mother.
Take care.
Love, Jan and Tom Cavan

Tony & Family, It will be the little things that will be remembered: the quiet moments, the smiles, the laughter. And although it may seem hard right now, it will be the memory of these little things that help push away the pain and bring the smiles back again. At this time of sorrow may these truths sustain you.. ... Juliette will always be as close as a memory and the God of all comfort is always as close as a prayer.

My sympathy goes out to the family. I went to school with Pierre (Cardinal Leger, Pierre Laporte, etc..) many years ago, but sure remember him and his family. I lost my parents many years ago and if it can make you feel better, you'll remember all the good things and forget the bad. All the best and my prayers are with you.
