June BARNES Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers from Feb. 19 to Feb. 20, 2022.
BARNES - June V. (nee Griffin)
February 17, 2021. Beloved wife of the late William Barnes; devoted mother to Thomas (Therese), Billy (Lynn), John (Karen), Jim (Madelyn), and Mary (Jim) Wellenzohn; loving grandmother to Connor, Ryan, Will, Lyndsey, Kelsey, Jesse, Tommy, Jimmy, Ben, and Bri; great-grandmother of Keira, Griffin, and Weston. Following the passing of husband, William, in 1973, June went to work for the City of Buffalo under the CETA program. Throughout her 20 years of work with the Buffalo Sewer Authority, she developed many lifelong friendships at City Hall and personified competence, kindness, and hard work. In recognition of her service, the Common Council proclaimed January 13, 1995, as "June Barnes Day", in the city of Buffalo. Actively involved in her parish, children's schools, and community, June was often seen with a smile and a word of support in the Timon Auditorium and on the bleachers at Caz Park, and for many years was involved as a Bingo worker, in Mothers Club and the Hillery Scholarship Foundation. In 2003 she received the Hillery Foundation Honor Award for her long-time service. June was a longtime member of the First Ward South Buffalo Democratic Society, wherein 1986 she was named, "Woman of the Year". In her retirement, June was an active member of St. Thomas Aquinas Travel Club. June was always deeply grateful for the love and support she received from her many friends. She will best be remembered for her kindness, positive spirit, and quiet strength. Friends and family may call Monday, February 21st, from 2 PM to 8 PM at Hoy Funeral Home, 3855 Seneca Street, West Seneca, NY 14224. Friends are invited to attend a Mass of Christian Burial at St. Thomas Aquinas Church on Tuesday, February 22nd, at 9:30 AM. The Mass will be live streamed at www.stthomas.com. Please assemble at church. Flowers gratefully declined. Memorials may be made to Mercy SNF at OLV/Activities Program, 55 Melroy Ave., Lackawanna, NY 14218. Arrangements entrusted to REDDINGTON FUNERAL HOME.

Long before Connor and Ryan called her Momma, I called her my mother-in-law. June was a pillar of strength for her children when her husband died at such a young age. She lived the rest of her life as a true friend to those who were lucky enough to know her. She always had a positive attitude and a smile- and of course her Irish wit. RIP Veronica June.

Aunt June is now with her mother, father, sisters and brothers. She was a great Aunt who will be missed by everyone who knew her.

Loved your mom! Enjoyed our talks, her words of wisdom as we shared a seat on the Abbott Rd. bus taking us to City Hall where all the action was. She loved her jobs and impressed us all with her high scores on every Civil Test she took. She was the smartest woman in the HALL! Rest In Peace June! Your exemplary work is complete here on earth.

Tom, Billy, John, Jim, and Mary, Along with her beautiful smile, when I think of your Mom, I remember her great sense of humor and her laugh! A woman of grace and strength, the Valedictorian of her class! and who, despite being widowed at such a young age, raised an incredible family. Women like our Moms were our rocks and our foundations, giving everything they had and asking nothing in return. Rest In Peace , June Bug, Rest In Peace.
