June KOOPMANS Obituary

Published by Edmonton Journal on Jan. 20, 2012.
KOOPMANS, June (nee Adams)
June 30, 1943 - January 18, 2012
It is with great sadness that the family announce the passing of our dear Mother and Nana, June Koopmans.
June came into this world, bringing with her the light of God. She was born and raised in Edmonton, Alberta. She was the second oldest of eight children, and grew up caring for her younger siblings and was never seen without a book in hand. She attended Jasper Place High School, and then went on to study at the University of Alberta completing her Bachelor of Education degree. Her teaching career started off in Clandonald Elementary School in Clandonald, Alberta and then onto Edmonton, and taught at HR Gray School, Afton Elementary, and finally Rio Terrace Elementary. June's life calling was to be a teacher of young children, and continued to love and nurture her own grandchildren by teaching them through love, reading and crafts. Mother felt called by the Lord to continue to teach by studying Bethel Bible Series and teaching to study groups at Trinity United Church. She has since taken some more Theology classes at King's University College.
She is lovingly remembered by her children April (Marvin) DeJong of Calgary, Rory Koopmans of Edmonton, Sean (Xiaona) Koopmans of Beijing China; her former husband and friend Joe Koopmans; her grandchildren Willem, Reece, and Griffin DeJong, and Lucia Koopmans; her siblings Ron (Darlene) Adams, Allan Adams (Sharon), Anne (Eric) Tibbitt, Arlene (Barry) Guarino, Blaine Adams, Janet Adams (Ron), Gary (Janice) Adams, as well as numerous relatives and friends.
Mother was predeceased by her parents Grace and Archie.
Her legacy is shaped by love and compassion, she always had a smile for her family, friends and strangers that she met along the way. A Celebration of her life will be held at 1:00 p.m. at Trinity United Church, 8810 Meadowlark Road on Monday, January 23, 2012 followed by High Tea held in the Church hall. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the Edmonton Autism Society, #101, 11720 Kingsway Avenue, Edmonton, AB T5G 0X5.
The family would like to thank the doctors, nurses and staff at the Misericordia Hospital Intensive Care Unit for their amazing care and compassion during our Mother's stay there.

June and I have been friends since we were in high school and for the past several years we have met for lunch every two months with other high school friends. These lunches were a highlight for June and each one of us. Our last lunch was on Friday Jan 13. It is now a precious memory. She was always cheerful and I will miss her. I pray for courage and strength for her family at this difficult time.

I will always remember my Aunt June as the first person to teach me to bake when I spent summers in Edmonton. My first recipe I made with Aunt June was chocolate cupcakes. Aunt June was a very special person who always had a smile and something kind to say to people. She always had a kind heart and she was a compassionate person. She never ever forgot my birthdays no matter where ever I lived. I could always count on her calling me on my birthdays and sending me birthday cards. This Xmas she sent a letter to me. She was very proud of her children and grandchildren and loved to share their milestones with family and friends. I will miss you Aunt June. Thank you for being my aunt.
