June Thorn

THORN June S. (nee Slingerland), 76, of Toms River, formerly of Bloomfield and West Orange, passed away peacefully Sunday, June 8th, at Community Medical Center's Van Dyke Hospice Unit, after a heroic battle with colon cancer. June was born at Montclair Community Hospital in Glen Ridge, New Jersey on April 3, 1932 to Alford and Dorothy Slingerland of West Orange and Cedar Grove, NJ. June graduated from West Orange High School in 1950. After attending Katherine Gibbs Secretarial School in East Orange, she worked for many years as a legal secretary. She was a member and official of the Eastern Star Organization and also actively involved in Girl Scouts. She married Robert James Thorn in 1954 at Patterson Memorial Presbyterian Church in West Orange, NJ. Robert and June lived in Bloomfield for over 40 years before moving to Toms River 10 years ago. June was an active member of Watchung Presbyterian Church in Bloomfield and also the Pinelands Reformed Church in Toms River. June is survived by her husband, Robert J. Thorn, of 54 years; son Mark, his wife Lori, and granddaughters Megan and Kaitlyn; brother Col. Douglas A. Slingerland; nieces Nancy, Laura, Charlotte, Lee; and many extended family and friends. There will be a Memorial Service to celebrate June's life on Saturday June 14 at 11 AM at the Pinelands Reformed Church at 898 Route 37West, Toms River, NJ 732-349-7557.
