Karen King Berg passed away on April 11, 2020, at the home she shared with her daughter and family in Houston, Texas. She was born in Lubbock, Texas, on October 2, 1941 to parents John and Leona Denson King and moved at an early age to Spur. She spent most of her early life there, with her parents, her grandparents J. L and Georgia Riter King, and her sister Sue. In 1958, Karen moved with her family to Alamogordo, N.M., and there graduated from Alamogordo High School in 1960.
In 1962, Karen married Eric Berg and moved to Socorro, N.M., where she worked at the New Mexico Institute of Mining and Technology. Following her husband’s graduation in 1964, her travels began. She lived in Midland, Texas, where her son, Eric King, was born; to Houston, Texas; to Farmington, N.M., where her daughter, Carolyn Sue, was born; to Calgary, Alberta, Canada; to Tunis, Tunisia; to Slidell, La.; to Bakersfield, Calif.; to Manila, the Philippines; and to Perth, Australia, before returning to Bakersfield and getting her degree from Cal State Bakersfield in 1991. Karen then moved to Las Cruces, N.M., where she worked for Las Cruces Public Schools.
Karen was preceded in death by her parents, John and Leona King, and her brother-in-law, Mike Theodorson. She is survived by her son, Eric K. Berg, and wife, Jolene; daughter, Carolyn and husband Stuart Muirhead; grandsons Eric C. Berg and Holden Muirhead; granddaughter Meredith Berg; sister Sue Theodorson; and nephews Brian Theodorson, his wife Lydia and children Ashlyn and Connor Hughes and Scott Theodorson, his wife Sandy and children Leona and Melody Theodorson.
A celebration of Karen’s life is planned on Sunday, October 3 at 3:00 p.m. at the First Methodist Church in Spur, Texas.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Pulmonary Fibrosis Association (pfassociation.org) or to a charity of your choice.
