Richard L. Carpenter, 81, Elkhart, formerly of Mishawaka, died 12:30 p.m. Monday, Aug. 29, 2022, at Hubbard Hill Estates. He was born Feb. 9, 1941, in Elkhart, to DeWayne L. and Letha Arlene (Christophel) Carpenter Sr. On April 3, 1965, he married Janet (Welty) Carpenter, and she died December 19, 2014.
Surviving are three sons, Eric (Mandy) Carpenter, Savannah, Tennessee, Ted (Joy) Carpenter, Carmel, James Carpenter, Goshen; grandchildren, Andrew, Landon, Lauren, Jayden, Mitchell, Noelle, Sarah; siblings, Jerry (Pat) Carpenter, Goshen, Janice (Orv) Miller, Wolcottville; and a sister-in-law, Ruby Carpenter, Goshen.
Preceding him in death are his parents, wife Janet and a brother, DeWayne Carpenter Jr.
Richard was an environmental engineer for Uniroyal, Mishawaka, and Allied Signal, South Bend. He was a member of the Wakarusa Missionary Church and Gideon's International. Richard served as an assistant chaplain for the Elkhart County Jail Ministry. He was an avid fisherman and enjoyed gardening and being outdoors.
Visitation will be 3 to 5 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 1, at Rieth Rohrer Ehret Lienhart Funeral Home, 117 W. Waterford St., Wakarusa, and one hour prior to the 10:30 a.m. funeral service Friday, Sept. 2, at Wakarusa Missionary Church, 202 W. Waterford St., Wakarusa. Pastor Chris Knight and the Rev. Eric Carpenter will officiate. Burial will follow at Yellow Creek Cemetery. Memorial donations may be directed to the Elkhart County Jail Ministry, 26861 C.R. 26, Elkhart, IN 46517 or Gideon's International, P.O. Box 541, Goshen, IN 46527.

I´ve known Dick for many years. He was always very generous. I remember his delicious bluegill fish fry. He was quite an inspiration to me.
