Karen Willinger Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on May 10, 2025.
Karen R. Willinger, 64, of Mt. Holly Springs, Pennsylvania, passed away at her home on Easter Sunday morning, April 20, 2025.

Born on April 9, 1961, in North Canton, Ohio, Karen was the daughter of the late Herbert and Elizabeth Ryan. She is survived by her husband of 37 years, David Willinger, and her sister, Kathryn Miller of Norton, Ohio her nephew Ben and her brother-in-law Gary Miller. Additionally, she is survived by numerous cousins and an aunt of the Klein family as well as her half-brother Kevin Tubbs.

Karen graduated from Hoover High School in North Canton, Ohio and went on to earn a Business degree from the University of Akron. Her professional journey began at Star Bronze, which led her to Maryland, where she met David on a blind date. They married a year later and embarked on a life of travel and service together.

During their time abroad with the U.S. Navy, Karen lived in Augsburg, Germany, where she worked as a secretary in the maintenance department at the Gablingen Intelligence facility. She embraced the culture, participating in many events through the Navy and local clubs such as the Marineverein (Maritime Club), Kiwanis International and functions hosted by local officials in which the Navy contingent was invited. Karen also enjoyed attending the Oktoberfest in Munich as well as the local fest throughout the area. She enjoyed cross country skiing in the Bavarian Alps and traveling across Europe.

Later her husband was stationed in Rota, Spain, which afforded them the chance to continue to explore their host country, traveling throughout southern and eastern Spain and even traveling across the Mediterranean to visit Morocco on several occasions.

Upon returning to the United States, Karen worked in transcription at Carlisle Hospital before transitioning to the Sleep Lab. After earning her certification as a Polysomnographic Technician, she dedicated 19 years to the field before retiring at the conclusion of the pandemic.

Karen was deeply involved in her faith community at Hilltop Community Church in Mt. Holly Springs, serving as financial secretary, Sunday school leader, Higher Grounds café coordinator, and event hostess. She also participated in mission trips to support Hurricane Katrina relief and Red Bird Mission in Kentucky.

In recent years Karen was active with the Cumberland Valley Corvette Club. She and David would zip around in their 2001 Corvette convertible. On occasion Karen was known to turn off the radio and tell her husband that she wanted to hear the roar of the engine. She enjoyed the comradery within the club and taking cruises to different locations, even if was just an ice cream run.

Karen also cherished beach trips and gatherings with her girlfriends of the breakfast club.

Karen was known for her warm and generous spirit as well as her welcoming smile. She will be missed by all who knew her.

In keeping with her generous spirit, Karen donated her body to Science Cares for scientific research.

A celebration of life will be held at Hilltop Community Church in Mt. Holly Springs in June on a date to be determined.

Always with a smile on her face, Karen was one of those people you felt welcome around. My family and I didn't know Karen as well as a lot of you reading this, but the impact she made was just as significant. We shared laughs and drinks and stories of past and recent adventures. Our outings in and around Rota, Spain with Dave and Karen were some of the best times my family recall when we look back and reminisce. Karen will always have a place in our heart, fond and caring. It is with that heart, heavy it is, that we say our goodbye.

Dear Dave, I´ve been thinking back on all my times with you and Karen. The kindness you both carried and the way you were, together. It always made Marcos and I feel totally at ease with you two. Karen was always the first to laugh and at the same time, there was a quiet strength about her that I always respected. She was a lovely woman and I will always think of her with great warmth and gratitude to have known her. Marcos wants you to know that he feels the exact same way. We can´t be there for you tomorrow, but we are both praying for you as we know that Karen is already in the embrace of the Angels.
With love and condolences, Barb and Marcos

Dave: I came across this group of messages just yesterday, and when I saw the picture of our Carlisle sleep center group, all these memories of Karen just came flooding back to me. She was always so cheerful, enthusiastic, and energetic. But more than that, she was a true professional, caring intensely about our patients and often questioning if there was a better way to provide their care. She was sharp and knew her stuff. Please keep with you the knowledge that she made a real difference in many people's lives.

Dave, I´m so terribly sorry for your loss. I´ve been blessed to know and love Karen for 20 plus years. Her infectious smile could light up a room. She took great pride in helping her patients and helping others to learn her skills . We loved sharing stories and pictures of our fur babies and helping each other through heartbreak when our fur babies left us. Our work family was so blessed to have Karen in our lives. I miss Karen and I´m so sorry for your loss. I´m praying for peace and comfort for you and your family.

Karen was loved by the Friendship Sunday School Class members . She was instrumental in guiding these young adults in class as well as setting up and serving coffee to folks as they entered for Sunday School. Her helpers over the years were Barry, Colleen, Sandy, Jack, Kathy, Evan, A.J., Sandra, Eileen, Dave and Bill.
Dave and extended family, may you find comfort and peace knowing how much Karen was loved by all who knew her.

Dave: It was devastating to hear of Karen's passing. She was so pleasant to talk with when we both had our dogs out (now some years ago). Hoping the good memories sustain you during this time and in the future.

I did not know Karen well. I met her briefly, volunteering with Furry Friends. I feel like I know her, however, after reading all the memories about her. It turns out we had a lot in common--we both lived in Germany and loved it, we both lived in Rota, Spain, we both love traveling and we both love animals. Reading these tributes brought tears to my eyes as I can read through the memories how much she touched people's lives and how much she is loved and missed. My heart goes out to those who are grieving her physical absence in their lives.

Dave
Karen was always a strong leg of support in ministry at our church giving her all to anything she felt the Lord had called her to do. I also like others, will always have embedded in my memory, her beautifully uplifting smile. She was a very loving and kind soul, and Laura and myself will never forget her. Please know that Laura and I are uplifting you and your family in our prayers, in this time of deep loss. Pastor Ed and Laura Alwine

Dave, this is such a lovely obituary. It really captures her and the life she led. I love the phrase in it that says "Embarked on a life of travel and service together." This conveys so much about your lives together. I´m really sorry for your own and your family´s loss.

Karen was my best friend in high school, college, and beyond. Our birthdays were just days apart. I remember Saturday nights dancing at the Galaxy until the lights came on and then having 2 a.m. meals at Denny's. She was my matron of honor, and we spent part of our honeymoon in Augsburg. Karen and Dave had our room at the hotel festooned with a congratulations banner on our arrival. We still have that banner. She loved Dave and she loved her dogs! I looked up to her (she was smarter and prettier than me) and I loved her as the sister I never had.

Karen and I met when we were 10 years old at Clearmount Elementary in North Canton and have remained friends ever since. No matter where the journey took us, or how long it had been since we connected, it was as if we had just been together and the conversation continued. I will always remember Karen's many kindnesses, her generous spirit, and her glorious smile.

Dave, Kathy and family: My heart is broken for your loss. May you all find strength, comfort and peace during this most difficult time, and always cherish your beautiful memories of Karen.

with all my love, Allison Riggle

Karen was an amazing student. Always smiling during Zumba and RIPPED. She had gotten so good that she was comfortable enough to join me up front and face the class, side by side to me. I was so proud of her and you could see the joy in her eyes. That she stepped out of her comfort zone and did the hard stuff. She was an inspiration to everyone in class. We all miss her. Prayers for her soul and her family.
