Karsten Mathers-Anderson Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Apr. 16, 2025.
Mr. Karsten Michael Mathers-Anderson, age 37, passed away on March 23, 2025, in Oroville, California from cancer. Born on November 1987, in Omak, Washington, Karsten lived a life marked by quiet strength, deep compassion, and a steadfast commitment to serving others through education and faith.

Raised by his devoted mother, Jonni-Lynn Malley, and for a time by his grandfather Richard Abercrombie, Karsten grew up with strong values rooted in love, resilience, and faith. From an early age, while he was involved in church life, first at Faith Assembly Church in Redding and later at Valley Christian Fellowship. His spiritual journey included impactful youth group mission trips with YWAM to San Francisco to serve the homeless and to Mexico to work with orphans. He also gave of himself as a mentor. In his last years he no longer attended church. Focusing on work and close family. While not attending Church he held on to his beliefs. These experiences helped shape his enduring relationship with Jesus Christ and instilled in him a lifelong desire to help those in need.

Karsten pursued his education with determination and purpose. He began his academic journey at Shasta College in Redding, California, where he completed general education courses while working janitorial jobs to support himself. He continued on to UC Chico where he earned a Bachelor's degree in Art Education and later achieved a Master's degree in Curriculum and Instruction from UC San Diego. Throughout these years of study and hard work including nine years of employment at KFC in both Redding and Idaho, Karsten remained focused on his goal of becoming an educator.

His teaching career began at a continuation school in San Diego where he taught Art and English. Eventually settling in Oroville, Karsten became an art teacher, a role he embraced wholeheartedly for the remainder of his life. He poured his love for reading and art into his classroom, inspiring students not only through creative expression but also through the quiet example of integrity and compassion that defined him.

Karsten was known for being introspective and reserved; he often said it was better to wait until he had something important to say. Yet beneath that quiet demeanor was a fiercely protective spirit, especially toward those he loved and a heart full of compassion. He never sought the spotlight but left lasting impressions on many who came to know him.

Outside of teaching, Karsten enjoyed reading avidly, playing video games, engaging in paintball battles with friends, and creating art. These hobbies were not just pastimes but extensions of his thoughtful nature and creative soul.

Karsten is lovingly remembered by his Loving wife Mo Mathers; his mother Jonni-Lynn Malley; half-sister Valarie Anderson; uncles Ray Dunbar, Roy Dunbar, Matthew Baber, and Billy Baber; aunt Beverly Grimsley; numerous cousins as well as nieces and nephews; and in-laws Patrick and Andy Mathers. He was preceded in death by his grandmother Pat Dunbar; grandfathers Bill Dunbar and Richard Abercrombie; aunt Lorretta; and uncle Ricky.

A Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, May 3, 2025, from 11:00 AM to 2:00 PM at Grace Baptist Church located at 3646 Oro Dam Blvd. E., Oroville, California 95966.

Karsten's legacy lives on through the lives he touched, as a teacher who nurtured creativity, as a man of compassion who served quietly, and as someone who chose compassion over conformity. May his memory bring comfort to all who knew him.

Karsten was the greatest gift of my Life. I have loved him since I knew I was going to have him. And he added so much joy to myself and those around him. He made me the proudest Mom ever.
While he had been a introvert, he also was a loyal friend and family member. His heart was so big. And it showed in his compassion for others.
A part of me will always be missing until we meet again in Heaven.
