Karylena “Kay� Carey, age 64, of Washington, Iowa died Tuesday, December 14, 2010 at Mercy Hospital in Iowa City following a six year battle with breast cancer. Celebration of life services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday, December 17th at the Faith Baptist Church in Washington with Pastor Don Ruffenach officiating. Visitation will begin at noon on Thursday at the Jones & Eden Funeral Home where the family will receive friends from 6:00 – 8:00 Thursday evening. Interment will take place at the Elm Grove Cemetery in Washington, Iowa. Memorials have been established to Breast Cancer Research and Awareness programs through Mercy Iowa City and Faith Baptist Church in Washington. Online condolences may be sent for Kay’s family through the web at www.jonesfh.com. Kay was born June 19, 1946 in Mt. Pleasant, Iowa the daughter of Henry and Mazie (Horning) Manning. She graduated from Mt. Pleasant High School. On October 1, 1962, Kay was united in marriage to James Carey in Washington, Iowa. Kay worked at McCleery Cummings Company in Washington for 32 years. For the past several years she worked at the Registration Desk at the Washington County Hospital. Kay was a member of the Faith Baptist Church in Washington, Iowa. She enjoyed collecting Santa’s, candy containers, angels, antiquing, and decorating her home for the different seasons, especially Christmas. Kay was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother and great grandmother that loved her family, enjoying her grandchildren’s activities and traveling with her husband. Kay is survived by her husband of 48 years Jim Carey of Washington, Iowa; son Brian Carey and wife Brenda (Libe) of Aztec, New Mexico; daughter Brenda Adrian and husband Steve of Washington, Iowa; daughter Karla Koenig and husband Jeff of Iowa City, Iowa; eleven grandchildren and one great grandchild. She is also survived by her sister Lucille Hudson and husband Jack of Hillsboro, Iowa; sister Barbara Schenk and husband Jim of Mt. Pleasant, Iowa; sister Mary Ann Dupree of Mt. Pleasant, Iowa; sister Charlene Ragan and husband Ron of Oxnard, California; sister-in-law Mary Manning of Mt. Pleasant, Iowa; sister-in-law Beaulah Manning of Mt. Pleasant; and brother-in-law Richard Magdefrau and wife Charlotte of Washington, Iowa. She was preceded in death by her parents, Henry and Mazie (Horning) Manning; two brothers, Earl “Bud� and Jim Manning; two sisters, Frances Magdefrau and Darlene Magdefrau; and two brother-in-laws, Robert Magdefrau and Ron Dupree.
