KATHERINE BRUMLEY Obituary

Published by Richmond Times-Dispatch on Feb. 1, 2010.
BRUMLEY, Katherine Louise Campbell, of 500 Tuckahoe Boulevard, Richmond, died unexpectedly on January 28, 2010. Katie, the daughter of William A. Campbell and Lynnette H. Campbell, was born in Durham, North Carolina, and grew up in Chapel Hill, North Carolina. She attended Sweet Briar College from 1992-1996. During the summer of 1995 Katie attended St. Anne's College, Oxford, as a participant in the Virginia Program at Oxford University. She received a Bachelor of Arts degree in History and Government, Magna Cum Laude, and was presented the Anne Gary Parnell Taylor Award in History. After graduation from Sweet Briar, Katie joined Hunton & Williams as a Case Clerk and worked in that capacity for three years. In 2001, Katie received the degree of Master of Urban and Environmental Planning from the University of Virginia and was recognized by the American Institute of Certified Planners as the outstanding planning student. She then joined the National Trust for Historic Preservation, in Washington, D.C., and did distinguished work with the Trust protecting and enhancing buildings in an historically African-American neighborhood near the city's new convention center. In 2003, Katie married Robert H. Brumley III, and in 2004 they moved to Richmond. She was selflessly involved at her children's pre-school, Reveille Weekday School, and an active volunteer with the former Kid's Carniball Guild of the Children's Museum of Richmond. Katie lived her life to the fullest. If the task at hand was a history paper, then it had to be the best history paper in the class. If the issue was a party, then it would be the best party anyone had ever attended. To every undertaking she brought high intelligence, a bright spirit, a wry wit, deep compassion and joy. She was a devoted, loving, and imaginative mother, a caring and beloved wife, and a loyal and generous friend. All who knew and loved her will treasure their memories of her, and their "Katie stories". Katie is survived by her husband, Robert H. Brumley III, their children, Campbell Grayson Brumley and Robert H. Brumley IV; her sister, Anne Elizabeth Lund, of Durham, North Carolina; her brother, Alistair E. Campbell, of Utica, New York; and her parents, Lynnette H. Campbell and William A. Campbell, of Chapel Hill, North Carolina. A memorial service will be held for Katherine Louise Campbell Brumley on February 4, 2010, 11 a.m. at St. James Episcopal Church, Richmond, to be followed by interment, 2 p.m. at St. Paul's Episcopal Church, Miller's Tavern. The family requests that in lieu of flowers, contributions be made to Bank of America for the Sweet Briar College Memorial Fund for Katherine Campbell Brumley.

Rob,
I consider myself so lucky to have had the opportunity to be a part of your families’ lives. Katie was such a wonderful mother to Hayes and Grayson and I will always remember her smiling face and our numerous inside jokes. In the few years I knew Katie, she inspired and encouraged me to be a better person and to always strive for perfection. I will always remember Katie and the children sitting on the steps waiting for me to arrive, when I would come over to watch the children. Katie’s memory will always remain deep within my heart.
God gives us examples on this earth of how we should live our lives and Katie was one of the best examples I know. Please know that you and the children, as well as The Campbell’s and The Brumley’s are in my thoughts and prayers. If there is anything that I can do to help, just remember I am only a phone call away. I will always be here for your family.

Dear Brumley Family:
Though my name wont be familiar to you, I can assure you that all of your names are familiar to me. Bill has been over the past 30 years my guru in the working world and my friend in the personal world. My heart is sincerely broken for you all. As I read over the condolences online what I see is a picture of someone who was warm, loving, generous and kind. That is certainly keeping having known Katie's Dad all these years. Please know that I will keep you all in my thoughts and prayers.

Rob,

I was so blessed to come into your families lives 4 years ago with Grayson and then to see you extend your family with Hayes. You all have been like family to me. I will always remember Katie and I talking on the porch after you all came home, after watching the kids. I will always remember the sweet smile and the warm inviting hug that I received from Katie everytime I came over the watch the kids. I am so thankful for having Katie grace my life in such a short period of time. She will be greatly missed.

I was shocked an saddened to learn of Katie's untimely passing. I remember her smile and bright spirit when she was student at Sweet Briar. When I next saw her at a function at my son's school a few years ago, she was just as radiant as ever, and so very proud of her family.

Our thoughts and prayers are with the Campbell and Brumley families at this very difficult time. God bless.

“We’re HERE!!!” is one of the first things I ever heard Little Katie say when we first met at Hampden-Sydney. She and her friends came into the dorm on a Thursday night while banging on the radiator pipes, gracefully announcing their presence. I made the mistake of letting her know how annoying I thought she was. Well of course she only increased the frequency and the intensity of the noise the next time she arrived. Who knew such an inauspicious start would eventually lead into the friendship that it did. That woman was a firecracker.

Yes, there were hundreds of “Katie stories” that will be retold this week. But I will also remember the more subdued ones, like how she went out of her way to make my wife feel at home among Katie’s wide circle of Sweetbriar friends. Katie was so selfless that way.

Our hearts go out to Rob and the extended Campbell and Brumley families. What we wouldn’t give to hear her clang on those pipes one more time…

There are no words to express how deeply sorry I am to hear of Katie's passing. I attended Junior High and High School with her and she was a fellow 1992 Debutante. She always had that bright smile gleaming on her face that just infected people as she walked into a room. My thoughts and prayers are with her family during this time. Rest in Peace Katie.

When I remember Katie I remember her smile, her enthusiasm for everything in life - even when she was a summer camp counselor with me at Sneakers.

I remember her radiance on her wedding day and the joy of her marriage!

I think of how Lynnette and Bill beemed everytime you asked them about Katie.

She will be missed and my heart is with all of you as I hold you in my prayers.
