Katherine Pope Hackbarth

Katherine "Katie" Adele Pope Hackbarth, age 73, passed away peacefully on July 9, 2014 surrounded by her loving family. Beloved wife for 48 years to Alfred E. Hackbarth, Jr.; devoted mother of Katherine "Kate" (Greg) Rekett and Alfred (Megan) E. Hackbarth, III; proud grandmother of Elizabeth "Liza" and Reed Rekett; William, Harrison, and Lily Hackbarth; daughter of the late Elizabeth and Henry Pope, Jr.; sister of Nancy Schlangen and Alison Jones; aunt to numerous nieces and nephews. She attended North School and Central School in Glencoe; New Trier High School in Winnetka. She graduated from the University of Colorado at Boulder with a B.A. degree where she was also an active member of Delta Gamma sorority. She was an avid golfer who loved the game and served as a devoted member of the Women's Western Golf Association. Her favorite activity was spending time with her grandchildren. She also loved to travel as well as spend time volunteering for the Glencoe Garden Club, where she recently served as President. She also served as President of the Henry Pope Foundation since her father's death in 1991. She was a lover of tradition, a teacher and mentor to many, as well as proprietor of her cherished collection of frogs. She always loved a good party. A celebration of Katie's life will take place on Friday, September 5, 2014, between 3pm and 7pm at Glen View Club, 100 Golf Rd., Golf, IL. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Henry Pope Foundation, 20 North Wacker Drive, Suite 1520 Chicago, IL 60606. Internment at the Glencoe Union Church will be private.
