KATHERINE DALGLEISH BURDICK HIMES

November 19, 1929 May 6, 2022

Katherine Dalgleish Burdick Himes was born on November 19, 1929 in Santa Monica, California. She attended Covina High and UC Santa Barbara. Later Katherine was a high school Home Economics teacher at Arvin High School, Kingsburg High School and eventually West High School in Bakersfield where she finished her career as a High School Counselor. Every summer during her college years she worked at Canyon Lodge at Yellowstone National Park.

Katherine married Jack Burdick in December 1957. Karen Burdick (Burse) was born in July 1959 and Michael Burdick in June 1961. Sadly Jack passed away in 1973 from complications of heart disease. Katherine single-handedly raised the two teenagers. In the summer of 1975 she packed the station wagon with Karen (16), Michael (14), and cousin Lori (16). They pulled a tent trailer, visited 28 states in eight weeks. On the way they visited family and friends and every possible historic sight. Katherine loved to take pictures (we only wish she had documented what those teenagers really thought of that trip). Many Labor days, Memorial days and Easters were spent at Morro Bay State park with again more teenagers, and of course Carpenteria in the summers.

After a long acquaintance and a three year relationship, Kate and Bob were married on February 13, 1987. They were married in the First Presbyterian church and have maintained membership.

The previous year Kate had worked on the Colorado trail, so the first summer after the wedding both Kate and Bob worked the trail. This was the beginning of many seasons of hiking, back packing, and camping in the High Sierras. In addition to hiking Kate and Bob trailered across the US on multiple adventures through retirement. These vehicles took them around the United States, to special places in California, Elder Hostels, and Jazz Festivals. Friendship Force International took Kate and Bob to countries beyond the U.S. to enjoy the close relations with native families. Another great joy in their lives was travel with close friends the Petkers.

In November of 2019, Kate and Bob moved into the retirement home at Rosewood. At Rosewood Kate felt comfortable and very much at home with the residents. They have been like family to us and we appreciate that.

A Memorial Service will be held at the First Presbyterian Church at 1701 17th St, Bakersfield on Saturday, May 28, 2022 at 11 am.
