Kathleen Pearl Beland as a very young child

I would like to share a special memory that I have of Aunty Pearl. Years ago, in Hudson, Aunty Pearl surprised us with a visit. Mummy was also visiting and Aunty Pearl's impromtu arrival, turned into a wonderful party.
Aunty Pearl, Mummy, Montana (around 3 years old) and I spent the afternoon dancing, singing, laughing and crying in the living room. The strongest memory that I have of that day, is of Aunty Pearl's smiling face and the hugs she was giving us all.
She was a bright light. Her words were always kind and soft spoken with genuine care and feeling. I know that she is safe and that loving arms greeted her.
We were so very lucky to have been able to call her family and friend.
Love Always,
Lee Anne

Some of us are artistic, and some of us are "artists". Aunt pearl was an artist through and through. There was something uniquely different about her, about the way she saw the world and herself in it. It was clear to me in speaking with her that she saw everything through a different lens. She was as unique and special as any of the great artists who have come and gone. Some artists break through the chatter and are able to touch millions, while others work quietly and humbly in the shadows, with everyday being a struggle and a challenge. Aunt Pearl fought every day to be who she was. To all the artists, great and small, and to you aunt Pearl, we thank you for being different, and for sharing with the rest of us your vision of the world.
Love Patrick (a fellow artist)
PS: Thank you for the last series of paintings you sent me.

But I'm not the only one
I hope someday you'll join us
And the world will live as one"

Dear Kelly and Dan,
So sorry about your loss. I remember many wonderful evenings in your home. I got my first taste of bourbon with your mom. She was quite the artist, so kind and sweet. I remember hot chocolate and raking leaves. She is in heaven watching down on all of us.

Through my youth, in family gatherings, it was inevitable that I would have the chance to witness the gathering of the Triumvirate: the three sisters Béland, Paulette, Kathy (then Pearl), and my mother, Jean (then Jean-Lewes). To me, there was always something sacred and grandiose about the three of them, that went beyond the respect and love I had for my mother and aunts. Whether they were singing (and man, could they sing), directing a herd of disparate Bélands to their respective places, laughing uproariously or simply sitting with studied poise around the table, they commanded attention, respect and love.
Time passes, and so we lose touch, and then lose people entirely. But memory burns bright, in each of us, for as long as we will it. And in that way we never truly do lose someone.
Dear aunt Pearl, rest well your Earthly body. May your soul fly to the greatest heights, carried by our love, and the flame of our memories. Say hi to mom for us, bring our love (though she, too, knows she has it) and live on, forever.

So rightfully proud you were of your artistry that I was surprised when you very quietly gave me a baby gift for my Ginny. It was the most beautiful, pure white, crocheted baby blanket. I treasure it and still cuddle my children in it on chilly nights and think of you. Your lovely voice is now keeping Jean Lewes' company in the cosmic hereafter.
Dan and Kelly, my heart and thoughts go out to you.

Unca Peter says it so well, that one can hardly add anything after he describes so perfectly, what Kathy Pearl has done to and for us. Since her passing, the love in my heart has doubled, as if it were a gift that she left for me and apparently for some others too.
She had special powers which went beyond most humanly possible capacities. I love her dearly for all that she taught me and the solid unshakable love she showed me throughout a lifetime.
Kathy Pearl defied the entire world, challenging it to live within her parameters, rather than taking the easy route of just going with the flow. She chose the hardest path and faced everything with courage. Those who never got to truly know her, have missed a golden opportunity to meet a shining star.

So close when we sang together, yet so far when misunderstanding you, your art channel kept me tuned in: decades ago, you painted a miniature reproduction of a Vincent Van Gogh that I call “A Cedar of Lebanon beside a winding road leading to a ‘chaumière’ with smoke coming from the chimney” signed Vincent Van Kathy” and gifted to me with a little wooden easel for display. And on display it has been ever since that day, in my various abodes. No lack of space mattered, I needed you. Your “Bridge over Troubled Waters” for our Jeanie, your divine “Gloria” harmonies in “Les anges dans nos campagnes” both recorded for posterity, your “Danny Boy” for your son, the “Huron Carol” at Christmas, on the phone from Morrisburg to Marc’s outdoor broadcast system in Sosua, Dad and us 3 girls harmonizing Cantiques de Noël to nostalgic Quebecers passing by … my tribute to the sanity-preserving family singing reminds me what a Nun said to me as a child: “Chanter, c’est prier deux fois”. If she was right, boy did we pray my sister. And I won’t stop.

After great statesmen and princesses bid us adieu, we come together in common sentiment and feel as though we are now closer to them than ever we had believed.
Amongst us we are feeling an openness, caring , respect and admiration that can only come from such a regal spirit. Thank you Pearl. You have brought us closer and more loving.
