Kathleen Enteman Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Aug. 3, 2023.
Kathleen Thompson (Ffolliott) Enteman, known to most as Katie (or KT), died on July 15, 2023 from complications of dementia and pancreatic cancer. She was 86.

Katie was born in Johnson City, TN on March 7, 1937 to Sally and John Ffolliott. Her family lived in Ducktown, TN until she was 13 and then moved to South Orange, NJ where she graduated from the Beard School (now Morristown-Beard School).

When she was 17, she met a fun-loving guy named Bill Enteman at a dance. While she attended Garland Jr. College in Boston, MA, and Bill was at Williams College in Williamstown, MA, they continued to stay in touch via mail and visited each other when they could.

On June 18, 1960, she married Bill, her best friend. Throughout their marriage, they functioned as a unit, you almost never said one person's name without immediately saying the other's.

In the late 1950's, after graduating from college, Katie worked as a secretary for an advertising agency in New York City. Eventually, Katie set her career aside when she and Bill started their family. Later, in Providence, RI she became a Tax Law Librarian at Textron.

To her grandchildren she was "TT". Her adoration of them was complete and they reciprocated in kind. As a grandmother, she forgot the word "No" - all bets were off when TT was around. Grandchildren knew that the twinkle in her blue eyes meant fun was around the corner: the "emergency m and m's" in her purse were for sharing, TT Tea parties were at-the-ready, and dancing to "Baby Love" by the Supremes was expected. Her pride in her grandchildren grew as they did.

Katie was first and foremost a "people person". Though it's a phrase that can sound trite, with her it is an apt description. She saw a potential friend in every person she met. For that reason, she has friends everywhere and her social calendar was packed. Even as dementia took its toll, she waved and smiled at anyone who approached her.

Katie and Bill lived many places over the years, including: Cambridge, MA, Scotia and Schenectady, NY, Brunswick, ME, North Easton, MA, Providence, RI and Middlebury, VT.

By far, her favorite place to live was her beloved Providence. She enjoyed every aspect of that city. Bill often joked that she should be hired by the Chamber of Commerce!

Another place dear to Katie's heart was The Horseshoe, her home in South Orleans on Cape Cod. She loved boating on and floating in Pleasant Bay. That home is the spot she and Bill chose to marry and where they created many happy memories with family and friends. For guests, leaving The Horseshoe was never easy. First because Katie made everyone feel so warmly welcome, and second because she was queen of the long good-bye! Katie would insist guests turn on their emergency flashers as they drove away, and she would keep waving until she could no longer see those lights blinking.

Katie loved her pets - especially her too-many-to-name cats and her sweet golden retriever Sophie.

During retirement, Katie and Bill traveled together and had countless fun adventures along the way, mostly with Katie behind the wheel. They visited many National Parks and traveled to Europe, always making new friends.

Katie leaves her husband Bill with whom she enjoyed 63 years of marriage, children Sally and David, son-in-law Peter, daughter-in-law Nikki, her cherished grandchildren Jordi, Sydney and Charlie, sister Millicent and brother-in-law Eliot, brother Charlie and sister-in-law Lynn, and many beloved nieces and nephews. They will all hold her close in their hearts, as will all the friends she made along the way.

Her family will have a private celebration of her life, but if you wish to honor her, at sunset one day gather your favorite people and a delicious beverage, go outside and sing to the sunset. Then laugh at how silly that feels!

In lieu of flowers, if you're so inclined, donations in her honor can be made to Alzheimer's Association (alz.org), Friends of Pleasant Bay (friendsofpleasantbay.org) or Planned Parenthood (plannedparenthood.org).

I had a dream last night that I saw Katie and Bill again, so I thought I'd better check to see if both were still with us. It was great "seeing" them again in my dream.

I am so sadden by the news of Katie's passing. We had many happy times with the Entemans when they lived 2 houses away in Scotia. Katie was a special person. Her smile could light up a room. She had a wonderful sense of humor and gave of herself unstintingly. We would take our children on adventures in" Brownie" the station wagon. We went to Hyde Park one April, stopped for dinner and as we started for home discovered Katie was driving on the meridian.Katie soon figured it out ,she did not have her headlights on. Recently, I knew something was not right, but I hoped for the best. My sincere heartfelt sympathy to Bill, Sally and David. Katie was a special part of my past. Will send pictures later. Love, Jackie Mountain
