Kathleen Humphries Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers from Jul. 16 to Jul. 17, 2008.
HUMPHRIES-Kathleen Bernadette (nee Keating), was born January 17, 1915 on the farm six miles southwest of Lampman, SK and passed into the arms of her loving creator on July 10, 2008 at the age of 93 in Regina. She was the third youngest in a family of eight children. In her own words, her first 25 years were spent being the obedient farmer's daughter and a fairly successful student. In 1936, Kathleen earned her permanent teaching certificate and her first teaching job at Ackerman School near Cosine. She taught 50 pupils, grades one to nine, most of whom were German-speaking. Her wages were $398/year given in a promissory note which was paid out two years later. Teaching was her passion until she retired in 1983. Kathleen married Gerald Humphries on December 30, 1940. They lived with Gerald's mom and dad until 1943 when Gerald was conscripted and they moved to Camp Borden, Ontario with their first son Mervin. In 1945, while awaiting embarkation overseas, the war ended and the family was reunited. In 1946, they bought a farm mile from Ossa School, where they had three more sons, made many good friends, and lived happily until 1958. In 1958, the farm was sold and the Humphries' family moved to 776 Forget Street in Regina. In 1959, Kathleen took her first teaching position in Regina, a kindergarten class at St. Peter school. In 1976, she was transferred to St. Gregory, and in 1983 concluded her nearly 47-year teaching career at St. Michael school. On June 24, 1983, after a short retirement, Gerald passed away suddenly at age 65. In 1984, Kathleen renewed a friendship with Alfred Yeo, and after a 5-year courtship, they were married May 3, 1989. They were happily married until Alfred's passing on November 24, 2006. Kathleen truly possessed a beautiful, free, outgoing, loving spirit and the relationships she had with her family, friends, and students brought her the most joy throughout her long and energetic life. Left to carry on her spirit are her four sons: Mervin (Billie), Denver CO; Brian (Liz), Calgary; Rick, Calgary; Rob (Judy), Regina; her nine grandchildren: Gerald, Leslie (Chuck), Denver CO; Noelle (Al), Ryan (Brandi), Chris (Romney), Calgary; Julie (Ira), Edmonton; Shaun (Trina), Meghan (Fred), Lauren, Regina; her seven great grandchildren: Margaret, Rachael, Denver CO; Nick, Kathleen, Kole, Kaden, Lev, Calgary; and her many close friends. The family would like to invite all of Kathleen's family, friends, and especially students, to a celebration of her life. A prayer service will be held at 7:00 pm, Friday, July 18th, 2008 at St. Peters Roman Catholic Church, 100 Argyle Street, Regina. The funeral will also be held at St. Peter's Roman Catholic Church on Saturday, July 19th, 2008 at 11:00 am, with interment to follow at Riverside Memorial Park Cemetery, 815 Assiniboine Ave. E. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to The Alzheimer's Society of Saskatchewan, Saskatchewan Parkinson Disease Foundation, or The Heart and Stroke Foundation of Saskatchewan.

She was my kindergarten teacher from St. Peters school. I remember going to her house on an occasion to have a coin hunt and a barbeque.
Whenever I saw her over the years, she still knew who I was. I must have given her a lasting impression like she had on me. I wished that I could have gone to her funeral.

Mrs. Humphries was also my Kindergarten teacher at St. Gregory. I'll always remember going to class and there she would be waiting at the class door, smiling and greeting everyone. I have many happy memories of that class, a favourite teacher of mine that is for sure. My sympathies to her family.

Rob: Karen and I were very sorry to hear about your mother. I think she was my kindergarden teacher at St. Peter and have fond memories of her from you and I going through high school together. All the best through a tough time and let's stay in touch.
