Kathryn Kay Durrant

Kathryn Kay Durrant, beloved mother, daughter, sister, and friend passed away on New Year's Day at her home surrounded by her children and loved ones following a sudden and tragic illness. Kathryn was born on March 31, 1959 to George and Marilyn Durrant. She was the second oldest of eight children and the acknowledged family favorite. Kathryn was the very best mother to her four children: Katie Marie, Gary Durrant, Kevin Paul and Emma Nicole. She showed us a deep and unconditional love that we will carry with us forever.

Following her divorce and a twenty year hiatus from academics, Kathryn bravely returned to school where she received her Associate and Bachelor degrees from Utah Valley University, graduating with her daughter, Katie. She went on to receive a Juris Doctorate from Brigham Young University. For over a decade, she worked as an attorney for the United States Social Security Administration in the Salt Lake City, Albuquerque, and Boise offices. As so perfectly represents who she was, Kathryn left that successful career to join the non-profit DisAbility Rights Idaho where she sought to help and represent the most vulnerable among us.

Kathryn was a great world traveler and saw several wonders of the world including The Great Wall of China with her son, Gary, the Taj Mahal in India, the Holy City of Jerusalem, and the ancient Egyptian pyramids. Yet she most loved being home. Each of her homes became beautiful under her touch as she was a self-taught handy woman, interior decorator, landscape designer, and master seamstress. She sewed wedding dresses for both of her daughters. In her spare time, Kathryn also loved to write. She most recently published a short story in Boise's literary magazine, The Cabin. Her real love, though, was writing romance novels, and she hoped to publish one someday. She loved animals and housed quite the menagerie over the years, most recently, Dash the cat.

Kathryn was a faithful member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. She loved the gospel and her Savior Jesus Christ. To know her was to know Him. She served in many different callings throughout the church, but her favorite calling was Primary Chorister. Perhaps the greatest role of her too short life was that of grandma. She was the very best grandma and will be deeply missed.

Kathryn is preceded in death by her mother, Marilyn. She is survived by her father, her siblings and their spouses, and her children Katie (Tim), Gary (Amber), Kevin, Emma (Justin) and her twelve grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. In lieu of a funeral, family and friends will gather to Celebrate the Life of our beautiful Kathryn in the spring.
