Kathryn Phillips Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Feb. 2, 2024.
Kathryn M. Phillips of San Diego, California, transitioned from earth to heaven on January 25, 2024, at age 75 years young. Beloved wife of Marty Phillips, mother of Julie (Jasper) Adversalo and Megan (Ben) Fisher, and grandmother of Jasmine, Aurelia, Leona and Emily. She is also survived by her siblings Peggy (Jim) Day, Annette (Terry) Bichlmeier, Guy (Sandy) Lopes, Ann (John) Boyes, John (Alison) Gorman, and Jenny Crowe, and stepmother Sonja Lopes.

The eldest of three daughters born to Manuel and Barbara Lopes in Sacramento, California, Kathy made her home in San Diego since the late 1970s, drawn here by the warm climate and her love of the ocean.

As a secretary for more than 37 years in state government, Kathy provided administrative support to members of the State Board of Equalization and field office operations for CalTrans. She excelled in office management and was known for her outstanding shorthand (she was STILL using it at home to make notes that no one else could read!), typing, spelling, and grammar skills. Long after her school days concluded, she could diagram a sentence and correctly label all the parts of speech.

Kathy loved the color pink and always looked her best in coordinated, fashionable attire, frequently adorned with blingy accents accompanied with very sparkly jewelry. And her artistically designed manicures for every season and holiday were always a part of her fashion statement. Complete strangers would stop her on the street to tell her how nice she looked or how much they liked her outfit, which always tickled her pink!

Kathy retired in 2003 and enjoyed spending time with her family, shopping, and working out with her trainer. She loved to walk along the beach on Coronado Island and visit the Hotel del. Some of her hobbies in retirement included quilting and scrapbooking.

Kathy was a faith-filled, prayerful, and loving wife, mother, grandmother, sister, and friend. We are comforted knowing she is in the presence of our Savior and Lord, Jesus Christ.

The Celebration of Life service will be held on Saturday, February 24, 2024 at 11:00 a.m. at Cloud 9 Worship Center, 8498 Paseo Iglesia, Spring Valley, California, 91977. Please wear your favorite shade of pink in honor of the one we love, and we'll be happy to think she's giving us a wink from heaven above.

I worked with Kathryn at the State Board of Equalization. She was such a classy lady! She encouraged me to fill her open position when she transferred to CalTrans. She was a fabulous trainer and so patient. It was a tremendously rewarding change for me and I've never forgotten it. Sandra Van Auken, Melbourne Australia
